Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
CJ Fair +20NP in 37M season: +355NP in 946M per 40M: +15.0NP
Scoop Jardine +15NP in 35M season: +348NP in 883M per 40M: +15.8NP
Dion Waiters +9NP in 27M season: +387NP in 871M per 40M: +17.8NP
Brandon Triche +6NP in 19M season: +281NP in 806M per 40M: +13.9NP
Baye Moussa Keita +3NP in 28M season: +104NP in 407M per 40M: +10.2NP
Kris Joseph +1NP in 39M season: +413NP in 1155M per 40M: +14.3NP
James Southerland -1NP in 4M season: +264NP in 582M per 40M: +18.1NP
Rakeem Christmas -2NP in 11M season: +122NP in 409M per 40M: +11.9NP
Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 0M season: +105NP in 269M per 40M: +15.6NP
Fab Melo 0NP in 0M season: +308NP in 763M per 40M: +16.1NP
Comment: JB keeps saying we rely on our seniors. Scoop Jardine, despite his 6 turnovers vs. K State and a turnover that should count as a 6 vs. Wisconsin, leads the team in NP in this tournament, 45 to 41 for Southerland and 35 for Waiters. The other senior, Kris Joseph has only 13NP in the tournament, tied for 5th. In fact, his NP per 40 for the season is down to 14.3, 7th on the team, (I’m including Fab). The great success of the team has obscured the fact that this is a kind of disappointing senior year and tournament for KJ.

Offensive Dude of the Game: Scoop Jardine won it on gross numbers, (14 points and 4 assists = 18), as he has in every game of the tournament. Brandon Triche won the per minute crown, (11 + 0 = 11 in 19 minutes, or 23.2 over 40 minutes compared to 20.6 for Jardine). Using gross numbers, Waiters and Jardine have been the ODOG 11 times, Joseph 9 times, Southerland and Triche 4 times and Fair once. If you go by per 40 minutes averages, Waiters has been the ODOG 12 times, Triche 9 times, Jardine 8 times, Southerland 3 times, Joseph twice , Keita, Christmas and Carter-Williams once each. (They don’t add up to 28 because of ties).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 22/40 (.550: we are .522 on the season- we were .527 last year and .571 two years ago) from inside the arc, 5/9 from outside, (..556) and 5/9 from the line (.556). (If you drop it down, we were 55% inside the arc, outside it and from the line.) Wisconsinwas 7/22 (.318), 14/27, (.519), and 7/12, (.583) 5 of our 27 baskets were assisted, (18.5%), vs. 15 of Wisconsin‘s 21, (71%). We were driving to the basket: they were taking jump shots. More assists come from jump shots. A few years back I did a study correlating the various stats to winning percentage and % of baskets assists had the worst correlation. Teams that relay on jump shots win less than teams that can got to the basket to score.

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 64 points in this game, 30 in the paint and 5 from the line so he had 29 POP in this game. We have 954 points outside the paint in 36 games, an average of 26.5 per game. We’ve scored 2657 points, or 35.9%, have come outside the paint. We’ve had 522 POP in 19 home games, (27.5), 432 in 17 games away from the Dome, (25.4). If you count only “true” road games, it’s 244 in 10 (24.4).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 7offensive and 19 defensive rebounds. Wisconsin had 8 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 29% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 30% of the time. Wisconsin had 6 turnovers, of which 4 were Syracuse steals, (67%). Syracuse had 6 turnovers of which 2 were Wisconsin steals, (33%). We had 32 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 31. For the year we’ve manufactured 1836 possessions to 1685 for the opposition so we are up +151 in 36 games= +4.2 per game.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 49 FGA minus 7 offensive rebounds plus 6 turnovers plus 47.5% of 9 free throws = 52.3 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 52 possessions in which we scored 64 points or 1.231 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.129. That was the fewest possessions we’ve had in 15 years but what you do with possessions is more important than how many you get. The last two games we’ve faced two famous man for man defenses- Frank Martin’s Kansas State team and Bo Ryan’s Wisconsin team and we’ve shot 50 for 94 (.532) and scored 139 points in 116 possessions, (1.198)

Wisconsin: 49-8+6 plus 47.5% of 12 = 52.7 possessions. Let’s call that 53 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 63 points or 1.189 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.921.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 13-17, 20-10, 18-20, 13-16. We’ve had 32 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 37 quarters (of 144). Here are the averages per quarter: 15-14, 19-12, 19-16.5, 21-18. The only other game this year in which we lost 3 of 4 quarters was the Notre Dame game.
