Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. For this least post of the season I’m going to list them in order of minutes played in the season, not net points in the most recent game:

Comment: Baye Keita had an incredible statistical game. People are talking about Melo but Baye has arguably been more effective. Southerland’s numbers are of the charts after two games. But his history is to have his best games against the worst teams so don’t get too excited yet. But he does look like a different player. Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche seem to be in low gear so far. Dion Waiters is out-performing both of them, (although Brandon ahs played well on defense.) I‘m wondering if Mookie Jones is even a shooter any more.
　
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 34/56 from inside the arc, (.607), 6/20 from outside, (.300) and 12/19 from the line (.632). Albany was 12/25 (.480), 8/26, (.308) and 26/33, (.788). 22 of our 40 baskets were assisted, (55%), vs. 9 of Albany’s 20, (45%).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 22 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. Albany had 10 offensive and 19 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 54% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 40% of the time. Albany had 16 turnovers, of which 7 were Syracuse steals, (44%). Syracuse had 12 turnovers of which 5 were Albany steals, (42%). We had 63 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 41.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 76 FGA minus 22 offensive rebounds plus 12 turnovers plus 47.5% of 19 free throws = 75.025 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 74 possessions in which we scored 98 points or 1.324 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.202.

Albany: 51-10+16 plus 47.5% of 33= 72.675 possessions. Let’s call that 73 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 74 points or 1.014 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.828.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 minutes quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 28-18, 15-14, 30-24, 25-18. We’ve exceeded 15 points in every quarter this year, (we even got 21 in the third quarter vs. Manhattan), but barely did it in the second quarter vs. Albany.

-The Orange rebounded 57.1% of their missed shots (30% is average - the higher, the better).

-Conversely, teams generally strive for defensive rebounding rates of 70% or better. SU rebounded 74.2% of Albany's misses - pretty good here as well.

Great Job! SWC. There is another telling statistic reflective of this team. In tonights game... Starters 49 points, Bench 49 points. How often has that happened with a Syracuse team? The interesting part is that it's 5 Starters vs. 5 Bench players. Amazing!

I double checked the reboudning numbers. Per the SU Athletics box score, We had 22 offensive and 25 defesnive rebounds. Albany had 10 and 19. We thus rebounded 22 of 41 misses, 53.7%. I did make a mistake on Albany- I divided 10 by 25, not 35. They reboduned 28.6% of their misses, not 40%. Our reboduning in this game was much superior to the prior games which was good because we didn't force nearly as many turnovers.

I'm sure the caliber of the opposition had alot to do with that. But I really think our second team has better scorers than the first team. Jardine is probably a bit better than Carter-Williams as a scorewr right now. Waitter is much better than Triche. Joseph is off to a fine start but Southerland is scoring more per minute. Fair is a much better scorer than Christmas and Keita has better inside moves than Melo. We thought Melo might be the offensive center and Ketia purely a defender but I think Keita is actually the better scorer right now.

Theyaahve all these numbers- they are there in the box score. They can look at them any way they want to.
