Never Been a HC

So we hired a guy who didn't ever call plays and had been out of CFB for 8 years. O'Brien has at least called plays in both CFB and in the NFL.
Funny thing is, the happiest this board has ever been with Marrone's offense is when he was calling the plays at the end of the 2009 season.

I would add Roy Simmons, Jr. to the list.

And before Coach Mac, I would present Ben Schwartzwalder.

It took Mac seven years to truly achieve - that's the best lesson to learn - at a school like SU, it takes time.

What I truly believe: if a school today allows seven years for success, they will absolutely be at a competitive and economic disadvantage. In major revenue sports, that is just plain too damn long.

And waiting for an example from this century to prove otherwise. Asked for one months ago. The 1980s did not have the (ridiculous) economic realities football and far secondly basketball stand for.

100% true. The Coach Mac comparison of not giving up on a guy is really old and tired and in the year 2012 makes little sense. The world of college sports has changed so much in so many ways.

It's taking an outdated model and trying to force it into today's modern game.

Ahh, the laid back eighties.
I seem to remember the very same pressure on Coach Mac and the very same impatience on the part of some fans. Some things never change.

It's not even close the comparison. The money involved, the tv contracts, the conference affiliation shuffling, it is a different world today than back in the 80's. Comparing the two time periods is foolish. Today College Football is Big Business. Back when in the 80's it was a far cry from that. Pressure to win, no doubt. But NOTHING like it is today. Not even close

I fully understand what you are saying. ...but... I think that Syracuse University football is different and we have to create our own model for success, and as much as anyone, I want to win now. ...but our success will be a different model than 99% of other schools a quick fix is not likely here. The ACC move does give us stability and allow us time to build a program over time. I know every year we can't wait and we're always excited about our recruiting class, but it does look like this class is going to be the best in maybe 10 years and the staff is working on a class for the following year (much better early inroads) and we could see another strong class. Marrone's plan is going to take time. I hope we give him the chance to let it succeed.

Syracuse is different than 99% of other schools? UH? WHAT? WHY? That's an insane statement.

Wanna say SU is different than USC, Bama, Ohio St and the "big boys"...well yeah obviously, nobody would argue that. Claiming SU is different or unique to any middle of the pack or bottom feeder school in the ACC, PAC 10, Big 12, or Big 10 is flat out crazy talk... no offense bro.

More specifically, for football, a private school in the NE part of the country is going to take more time than a state school (anywhere, and more so state schools in the south) with larger enrollment, alumni base, quick infusion of cash and major upgrades to facilities.

Totally disagree. Build a football complex (ie the Carmelo center for football) and SU is at no disadvantage when compared to other schools (not counting the big boys, just the middle of the pack to bottom feeder schools in major conferences) around the country. It has nothing to do with being in the NE or a private school. SU is not some rare exception in college football, sorry it just isn't true

This sounds like very simple logic and an easy way to put at us as equals with our peers. ...but it hasn't happened yet, hopefully will be coming but there is a reason why it hasn't happened yet which might have to do with budget priorities. Steve Martin had a great line, "I have a plan for becoming a millionaire that is foolproof, first, get a million dollars." ...and we know that the type of upgrades we want is far more complex than that.

So, GRob should've gotten another 3 years? ;)
