New $50M Fundraising Campaign Launched - Champion CUSE

Known revenue generators: Football and Men’s Basketball
Possible Revenue Generators: Women’s Basketball and Men’s Lacrosse

Quite frankly the teams who’s home is the JMA Dome is where investment needs to be going too. This is random, but they should look into having a women’s volleyball game in the dome next season and market the heck out of it to draw a huge crowd with national eyes. I feel that these are the programs that can generate the most interest and revenue long term. We have a unique building that besides football can have absurd attendance number for their respective sport if it’s funded at a championship contender level.
They did this in 2013 for a couple games and it was a disaster. It was emptier in there than a WBB game.

Oy only 12 years late on that idea lol

It should go to revenue generating sports. You think the competition will be giving this to non-revenue sports?? I mean sure allocate a small percentage to non revenue sports but let’s not forget who drives the bus. This isn’t about equality, it’s about who makes $$

What ever the breakdown, it looks like schools are free to allocate the $20.5 mill however they choose without Title IX implications:

"Without a credible legal justification, the Biden Administration claimed that NIL agreements between schools and student athletes are akin to financial aid and must, therefore, be proportionately distributed between male and female athletes under Title IX," according to a statement from Craig Trainor, the acting assistant secretary for civil rights. "The claim that Title IX forces schools and colleges to distribute student-athlete revenues proportionately based on gender equity considerations is sweeping and would require clear legal authority to support it."

Altho, I bet there's a class action lawsuit to brewing to test that theory.

Probably off topic but I will say the athletic department barely puts any funding into the volleyball team. Their facilities are disgustingly bad.

They completely refurbished the Women's Gym last year.

When the Football expansion at Lally is completed, all the Olympic teams will have upgraded practice areas as well.

Agree. That's the key point. I'll be doing my part, too.

Here's my take having been known about this for a bit.

1) This signals SU is willing to play at the almost big boys table. Outside of the top 20-25 programs, most will be spending this amount (based on what SU knows).
2) Not all of the $20.5M will come from donors. I understand the BoT/Admin side has committed their own funding too. That's a drastic change from the past. Obviously the more we raise, the better off we are and will help. But the notion that this all falls on fans is completely wrong. The school is contributing revenue. The more we raise, the more we'll be able to funnel money to collectives on top of the $20.5M.
3) Having this centralized helps the school reward donors, who also, by the way, get a tax deduction. Doing it through the school is key. Doing it through a collective is bad if you care about deductions. Most donors are in the tax brackets where deductions help them contribute more. And having it centralized means the school can also credit donors with the money they contributed to a collection before. All fans who chip in should get some form of recognition and this campaign helps them do it.
Correct me if I'm wrong or misread something but I thought the increase in scholarships will be deducted from the $20.5 million? Which if thats the case maybe the school eats that money instead of coming out of pocket? Which works out ust fine imo

All they did was repaint the floor and put in bleachers where you could push the seats in electronically (used to have to manually push in the bleachers to close it). Everything else is the same.

I don’t think they have a choice.

It's not like they need a 5,000 seat VB only facility.

Just the first $2.5MM is deducted.

I won't argue it doesn't appear to be an impressive facility, but it is a whole new playing surface They didn't just grab some cans of paint.

This is a chance for all the complaining fans to make a difference. No donation is too small or too big. Be a part of a solution.

Putting aside my naysayer hat for a moment...seriously - the solution to what?

A couple years into the cash spin-cycle that college athletics stumbled into, I'm not sure what fan problem is solved by opening up the spigot more.

Reminds me a bit of this:

College basketball has changed. If you want to compete, you better have money. It’s all about getting experienced players in the portal and it’s going to cost money. Complain all you want. John Wooden wouldn’t win today just by recruiting. Acquiring talent means spending money.

$2 million for a one-time autograph signing fee at Ashley Schaeffer BMW and the like... I'll believe the NCAA can control such nonsense when I see them doing it.

haha amazing reference. I can feel next season turning around in my plums

I’m not giving money to buy groceries for a fry cook. I will however give money to buy groceries if we hire a professional chef.

I've been to a volleyball game and I thought it was a good looking venue.
Fair enough. I defer to you since you've actually been there in person as opposed to me just watching on tv.

They have done a poor job of connecting with the mid to low level donors. Would like to see some innovation there
Was about to say the same so will pile on. I think it's just an optics thing as well. Everyone everywhere is asking for more. I don't look at the University as a whole struggling as they buy buildings and open dorms and dining halls, and are paying professors millions on tenor.

However parts of the school in sports but also elsewhere need more money to be competitive.

It's really hard for people to give small amounts when they don't have alot that go into a black box with little understanding of where their money is going.

This is where Practical Scooch and Ideological Scooch come into conflict.

Practical Scooch knows that this is vital for SU to have any chance of competing at a championship level in any sport, and certainly for football and men's basketball.

Ideological Scooch thinks it's ridiculous, and perhaps obscene, that an entity that is, for all intents and purposes, running a professional sports franchise to ask its fans to pay expenses on their behalf. Can you imagine getting an email from the Knicks or Red Sox asking for donations to pay their players?!

I do hope those who parrot the "pay or shut up" line at least acknowledge how profoundly f__%^ed up this model is.

But, practically speaking, if we want SU to swim in these waters athletically, there seems to be no other choice.

Blah.

I don't get how you can say you don't understand. The money is going to help us compete in athletics. The rest sounds lazy to me IMO. People here love to complain there's no solution and then when there is a solution its never good enough for some of you. If you donate to XYZ the University has always done a great job explaining to me where that money goes. Maybe it's just because I've been giving to my alma mater forever and understand the process, but the complaints about this make no sense.

Those buildings you see being built are built by money donors(usually alumni) give. Hence the names on those buildings. Project typically has a fundraising component where dollars are specifically allocated for those projects.
