Class of 2027 New Commit: Adrian Sweeney (NY: CNS) Midfield (9/14/25)

Sweetlax is a national brand so the True All-State team is more on par with them (Sweeney is on that), but the upstate team is nothing to cough at either
May seem like a minor clarification but, Sweeney plays on the True National Black team in addition to the local True Upstate Black team. The local True Upstate team is far better than the state/regional True team since most of the local kids pass on playing for the regional team.
In the take for what it’s worth vein, in the final “club” rankings, Sweetlax was 1, Orange Crush was 33, 3D Upstate was 43 and True Upstate was 49 out of the 500+ clubs across the country.

I was recruited to play fraternity intramural basketball, volleyball, and slow pitch softball so I can absolutely relate to their recruiting process. Congrats to him and his family - they raised a good kid.

Gary was the first to call Colsey. Can't say he didn't try.

Yup, and he offered him his dad’s number 3 which seemed to have a big impact on him. Also went to the football game recruiting event. Too bad it didn’t work out. Would really love to someday understand how UNC was able to convince all those five stars to commit.

It’s a good video. It seems like Colsey was basically given the same offer from every top school (full ride) so he got to pick whichever school was the best fit. Small list, but appeared to be best of the best.

Whereas Sweeney got contacted by a bunch of different schools (he lists 20 at one point), and it sounds like given very different offers. For instance Hobart offered a full scholarship, but maybe Syracuse didn’t? That wasn’t totally clear. And Syracuse called both kids at midnight, but Gait called Colsey and Aquaviva called Sweeney.

They didn’t really ever discuss NIL which would have probably given us a fuller picture, but I don’t think we’ll ever truly understand NIL. Either way a fun watch, especially when you know one of the subjects is picking SU in the end.

Special shout out to Dylan Donahue and his sweet mustache which makes a cameo.

they all got exploding offers (and lots of money). it worked...but they might ultimately end up with some kids who are not good fits because they felt pressure to commit..

Was able to watch this in full. A few interesting thoughts

Clearly Gait adn SU pursued Colsey heavily, more than I anticipated. Looks like they came in 2nd and made an impact. Good to see the prior issues cleared up even if he ultimately chose UNC.

Interesting tidbit from Sweeney's mom about some of the other recruits on campus. It does appear that SU brought in a # of 5 stars and really went for it this year. Curious to whom she referenced as the player Hopkins showed up at his house at midnight.

All and all a very interesting look at recruiting. Sweeney was clearly a top priority for a # of schools, Hobart with a full scholarship offer I thought was very interesting.

Talent is talent and can overcome bad coaching, but UNC really needs something to show for all this in the next several years. Otherwise this is becoming a USC situation where their recruiting advantages become disadvantages since they get players for the ancillaries and not the actual sport. Call it bias, but it seems like the players this program gets are 100% fully on board and are coming for the lacrosse above all else.
