I have no clue what the shell game is, who will be back, etc, but wasn't there talk earlier that we'd likely end up having a smaller class than normal this year by design?

By my count, we've got 67 players returning right now ... which means there's room for 18 newbies.

If Hickey declares for the NFL, and Kinder takes his degree, we're up to 20.

We'd need a few more departures to get to 23-24.

You know how that goes--there's always unforecasted attrition every year. Would be surprised if we take less then 22-23.

And also would be surprised if we don't also add 3-5 more players after signing day from unusual sources.

Great news!

Welcome to Syracuse University Football!

This class will be low on the rankings list, mostly because it's going to be a small class. But looks better than usual on quality.

Per R ivals, we have 1 4-star, 9 3-stars, 4 2-stars. Typically we'd have a higher % of 2-star guys. One of the 2-stars appears to have a Pitt offer, for whatever that's worth.

S cout lists us with 1 4-star, 10 3-stars, 4 2-stars. The extra player on their list is Wayne Williams. For what it's worth on their list, Wayne Williams and AJ Long, two players most here feel pretty good about, are listed as two of the 2-stars.
Scout has serious problems with their rating system, Wayne Williams was a 3 star last year when recruited, and when we re-recruited him he is a 2 star. I asked about that ,and was told they probably will re-rate him, but you shouldn't go from 3 star to 2 star, just because you miss a semester.

Too much politics involved at those recruiting sites. They give benefit of the doubt to the bigger schools, who's larger subscription base gives more revenue to each of them. At this point, there is no sense as a Syracuse fan taking any of it seriously or personally. It's been going on for years. They like to have all of the fans at these other schools think to themselves, "Wow I'm awesome and so are the recruits we got".

Out of all of them, I trust ESPN's rankings the most, but still take them with a grain of salt. Actual offers, official visit suitors and watching film should be able to tell you most of what you need to know about a recruit.

Bottomline: Look at Rutgers...they have a shill at Scout overranking their talent. Yet Cuse has gone toe to toe with them on the field since 2009. We would've beaten them this year...unless they get several STs scores. For the most part every one of their 4 and 5 star guys are abject busts.

Not to mention that recruits who show up at their camps(multiple times) and pay cash seem to get an extra star or two

Hudson is a great name to have on New York's college football team! Welcome aboard dude, can't wait to see you laying out some WR's!

ESPN says 4.74 40Yd. Slow for a CB? Small for a safety? (5'11"). Or is this guy just a FB player?

Sounds like Shamarko...

At the NIKE Combine in Orlando this past spring his rating put him at #62 for all participants.

Listed at
5’-10.5
157
4.74 forty
4.22 shuttle (outstanding)
30 PB
34.3 VJ
Sparq 72.96

Of those who tested for the shuttle he was tied for the camp’s 5th fastest

An article over the summer said he runs the 200 meter in the 23 second range

I need to get more familiar with ESPN. How do our past classes compare? i.e. do they give out the 3 stars for just about anyone? (the way the other sites do with 2-stars as long as you're proven to have a pulse?)
If you go by the espn's numerical ratings we are getting more highly rated recruits than we have in any recent year except 2 years ago. For instance we have 8 commits rated a 77 or higher. last year we had one and we've only had 2-3 a year for most recent years (two years ago we had 8). But..I'm not sure if there might be some grade inflation creeping in, or whether the players are actually better.

the espn recruiting write up makes it sound like he is great at covering the short/quick routes but not high end speed for the long passes.

That's kind of where I am. But I'm going to take the optimistic approach given the other offers the kids have. Always the best barometer. The other thing I watch though is the good mix of positions. Hard to evaluate on a small class, but WR, clearly a need, looks like it's being recruited as well as we can expect. QB looks good (on high school paper) as well. I hope we keep up with line of scrimmage players, which has traditionally been battles that are harder for us to win. But also where finding diamonds in the rough, and developing players is something we've done so well with lately.

Without replying to 2-3 posts I'll user say most of you don't know what you're talking about with those recruiting sites. Writer doesn't always mean evaluator and the team rankings seem to come out in the wash for the most part. Some of you always want to point at offers, that's a bigger fraud than the ratings cause it comes from the kid mat times.

Do kids generally lie about this? I mean a few might...but it would seem to be a pretty dumb lie as coaches talk and recruiting services have inside connections to coaching staffs - so really you could wind up looking pretty stupid doing this. Or maybe no one gives a fuuuk and they can say whatever they want?

Some do lie while others just don't understand what a real offer is. Offers are greatly over inflated.
