New recruiting territories for the coaches

South Florida will remain a priority.

Just saw that the #6 ranked player nationally, according to $c out (or it might have been #8, either way, still top 10) is from St. Thomas Aquinas. Of course, he's Joey Bosa's little brother so I'm guessing even Rocco Casullo wouldn't be able to sway him from Ohio State.

I didn't realize that Davis signed with Florida.

Would have liked to have landed him, but feel solid with the trio of Ealy / Shepard / Pickard.

He will just not give up on this "coaching staff ignoring recruits" thing.

To be fair to Bailey, it's obvious that West Lindor didn't have any academic issues that he failed to meet. SU obviously went in another direction, but it seems they did a very poor job communicating with him and his coaches. I think it's ok for Shafer to admit that SU might have made a mistake in that situation, and since he didn't, it opens the door for Bailey to keep bringing it up.

At least they afforded West Lindor the courtesy and gave him months notice. They could've dumped him last week like some of the stories I read with schools all over the country.

Sounded to me like he was just reporting the status of the 5 verbals we had from South Florida.

True, and I understand that SU gave him that courtesy at some point. I'm not saying SU screwed the kid over. However I think it's fair for the beat reporter to ask the question when it looks as though academics isn't the reason. Avoiding the subject won't make it go away, just be honest and say that the new direction of the offense didn't fit his skill set. I mean there was no problem with coming clean on Edouard's academic issues, which would be area where a bit more discretion is probably warranted.

At least Bailey didn't mention Clayton picking buttgers lol

Well it was literally the first question he asked Shafer during the signing day press conference and Shafer was visibly upset that he was trying to take the PC in that direction.

It's the second time in as many days that he's brought up this "kids decommitted because we didn't keep in contact with them" stuff. It was one kid who said that and it was only his side of the story that was given at the time. Shafer is not going to address it directly, ever, so he more or less keeps bringing up a one story to create controversy.

Shafer already said publicly that he's not addressing that directly during the signing day PC when Bailey brought it up. He knows Shafer isn't going to address the accusations directly and he only has one side of the story, yet he keeps bringing it up. If he wants to go the Cohen controversy route of reporting, fine, but there are consequences to it.

Wrong time and place. That press conference was about the new class. Bailey can do whatever he likes - but his opening question being about a story that broke 3 months ago seemed like he was digging for dirty laundry.

Bailey needs to drop it. Plus he seems aware that we are the ones that moved on from the kids, but continues to say we didn't remain in contact. To me it seems like some pot stirring.

I'm sure it was intentional by Bailey to ask it in that venue. He probably doesn't like the notion coming from SU that he's not reporting the "real story". I'm not saying I am on his side, but why not call him in on Tuesday and tell him that West Lindor no longer fit Lester's version of the offense, and the other ones didn't meet the standards SU set forth.

It doesn't even have to be on Shafer to do this, it should be what Gross is paying Giansante to do.

Also we may still be recruiting South Florida, but I'm not expecting good results. Of all places in the country to recruit South Florida is a place where you can't just send down any coach and expect to pull kids. You have to have connections there or you will just be wasting time.

I didn't realize that. Been too busy at work to follow everything closely these past couple of days. So I guess you could say I read that article in a vacuum. I have liked his coverage though, hope he doesn't get Donnie Webb'd. I also hope he doesn't put on a mask, turn heel, and go full on Cohen.

No worries. In general I've liked his coverage too. I just hope this isn't the Jerry Springer powers that be at the PS steering him in this direction.

We need guys at the PS that can cover the team from an insider perspective and I was hopeful that he'd be the guy. But that ain't happening if he keeps this up.

Doesn't the kid realize that many of the head coaches of the University renowned for its school of journalism have no intention of tolerating journalistic coverage of their programs?

I like shafer…I really do. I thought overall, his Presser was really good….and he came across as a really sincere.guy……all the way up until he was asked the question about assistants not communicating with recruits….his answer to that question was really bad, he is not a good poker player, and it was obvious he was hiding something. I do not understand why many people, especially people in Leadership, are afraid to say I made a mistake….and I am sorry. Had he said that, then everything else that he said…would have been more believable…"Mea Culpa" works in our society…..Shafer really needs to own up to this mess and be honest. The Lindor kid was accepted at Brown, don't try to smear him in that…"If recruits don't live up to the bar we set….Blah …blah …Blah…I don't know all the particulars in his case…but it clearly was not a case of a kid not meeting Academic requirements! If you decide to move on…tell the Kid early…so he can maximize his options as well….

The reason he responded like that is because he was none too happy with the articles Bailey wrote when the kids decommitted. They were one sided, and inaccurate. I bet you he was wanting to take it out on him for a while. I have no problem with his response. A good scolding every now and again may do the PS guys some good.

It might be as simple as Shafer being unwilling to throw one of his coaches under the bus for not handling the WR situation better. He should have just done a Marrone and said it was on me. We'll do better and move on.

I talked to one of the assistant coaches on LOI Day and was told the staff knows the areas they are assigned to recruit are going to be changed but they don't know yet who is going to get what area. He expected it would be determined in the next couple of weeks.

To me, Bailey asking Shafer about decommits at the press conference shows how little access the media are given to the football staff. You say Bailey's reporting was one sided and inaccurate? Maybe it was. But you don't think Bailey tried to contact the coaching staff about the story, tried to get someone to speak anonymously to explain what happened, tried to get some sort of official explanation? He's a competent reporter. I guarantee you he did. And I'd bet he didn't get any kind of statement.

From a journalist's perspective, Bailey is just trying to gain clarity on a really fuzzy situation. There's something that isn't being said in this story, and it's the journalist's job to hunt it down.

Bailey wasn't grandstanding or trying to make a scene. He was asking Shafer a perfectly legitimate question in the only setting that was afforded to him. If Shafer wants to clear the air, he can always break down his incredibly limited and controlled access and actually talk to the beat reporters candidly.

Don't give me this "Bailey was wrong" crap. This is what happens when you barricade yourself from everyone.

What can I say? Disagree completely. Hope he gets PNG'd if he tries it again.

You are oversimplifying it a bit. I assume you have never been recruited but if a coach says here's your offer, but in order for us to hold our end of the bargain we need you to meet benchmarks i.e.

A. Gain weight
B. Gain Speed
C. Academic standing
D. Don't take any other visits (The Flood Rule)
*not saying these were in play just examples

etc.

Lets not pretend this kid had multiple committable FBS offers or he likely wouldn't have landed at Brown. That being said in the past the fans were kept in the dark on this shady business. Technology has opened the box. But this to me is just part of the game. If a kid can bail on his commitment up to signing day, then the school can too. I think shafer's response was not one of bad poker play, but he looked like he wanted to snap baileys neck. LOL

Why? You want him to drop the elbow on a young reporter trying to do his job?
