I believe I read on here the other day that the dome was having additional ribbon boards added? I apologize, I can't find the post or poster to ask directly, but does anyone know if that's true, and what the deal is here? Any other dome renovations happening currently?

I thought they were fairly new?

yes, the current ones were installed in 2012. However, someone on here said they saw additional boards being added on another level.

I was in the Dome last week and it looked like additional ribbon board was being installed between sections 100 & 200 in the endzones. The prior ribbon board is still there and is located between sections 200 & 300. Also 4 screens were added in the corners of the endzones right below the 200 sections. Should look a little different for the Pitt game

Thanks JDemo I knew I read that somewhere. What do you mean by screens exactly? Very cool that they continue to add color to the dome!

DRBartlett any chance you can grab some pics of these new boards next time you head to work? Thanks all!

Not sure of the exact size but they looked like 65" flat screens. They just had the block S rotating on them when I saw them so not sure what their official use will be.

A 65" flatscreen ? How would anyone even be able to see that from the stands?

So above the endzones there are now two rows of boards? You can see in this pic where that would be, correct?

Haha. I should have been more clear. I was standing near the 50 yard line and the screens looked like a 65" tv from there...meaning they are actually bigger (exactly how big, I have no idea).

In this picture, the black area between level's 1 and 2 is what was being worked on. This is the part about a quarter of the way above crossbar on the goalpost.

The corner monitors that I referred to look like they previously were an adverstisement board in level 200 of this pic.

Awesome by the University... hopefully they keep the updates on The Dome coming ...let's make this place unforgettable. I will say though, this makes me wonder about the upcoming reno on The Dome.

I hear ya, but I think the majority of work that will be done/needs to be done, has nothing to do with those areas. Bigger concourses, actual seats, new roof, etc, wouldn't effect scoreboards, imo.

Valid.

Maybe they'll start installing a scoreboard section of scores around the country and breaking sports news. Would vastly help improve the gameday experience and is one of the most simplest fixes. Really can't believe something this minor wasn't done years ago.

I just can not understand how this topic of out of town scores and sports news is an issue in the 21st century with mini computers in everyone's pockets. Not arguing just I do not get it.

Based on that pic and the rumor that a new roof will be built over the existing roof suggests there will be added vertical real estate above the 300s that we currently do not have. Maybe the dream of a huge-ass video board like the one they have in professional ballparks will finally become a reality. They can also add a concourse at the top of the 300s to alleviate egress during halftime and fire drills... for those that live in the 300s that would be a huge improvement to the game day experience.

From a revenue standpoint they can finally move the press boxes above the 300s for football... which would provide a golden opportunity to redo the luxury boxes between 100s and 200s. And the TV presentation would look more like big-time college football with the higher up camera angle.

To me, adding a third concourse above the 300 level will be one of the biggest fundamental improvements that could be made to the Dome. Add private boxes above the 300 level to help cover the costs of the renovation. Agreed, move the press to the boxes above the 300 level to open up that space for big money donors to move in. They should add some concessions to that level and some escalators and bathrooms too. This would really enhance things for people sitting in that level and reduce congestion in all concourses...

So based on what I was told, a new hardtop and luxury boxes ringing the top of the 300 level, I would guess vertical real estate would have to be added. I also don't think the box owners will be trekking up the stairs like the common folk either so id guess some type of alternative access is in one of the drawings. Elevators was mentioned though my impression was that was only one option being looked at. Fingers crossed on an upper concourse but having to rehab the current structure to accommodate something like that cost could make it prohibitive.

Could build out expanding the footprint. elevators on the outside of the current structure with new an widened concourses. Just make the footprint bigger.

Going to get "bunker suites" at floor level similar to what they have at Pitt as well.

If they do that, it might make sense to add suites to 200 level in the bball endzone and extend the third deck down a few rows to mitigate the loss of seats.

The Bierman article stated it would be a piecemeal renovation...maybe they are starting on some of it now.

"It will be done piecemeal, continuing during the summers of 2017 and 2018 with a goal to be completed by the start of the ’18 football season, without disrupting any of the big three sports of football, basketball, and lacrosse, along with previously scheduled events occurring between the September-May academic calendar."

I can only imagine how upset the basketball season ticket holders sitting in the 200 level if they eliminate those seats and tell them they can move to the 300 level nose bleed seats.

They can put in all the boards in the world and it won't matter because they show very few replays and certainly not the controversial ones.:bang:

I think the challenge with adding "400-level" boxes -especially for hoops - is the perception that the view might be too far away to charge premium rates. As some have stated earlier they need to find an engineering solution to add more seating to the pullout section.

My main concern so far is it sounds like they want to relocate the vendors to the archbold wing. At face value that sounds asinine. I'm not walking 120 yards just to grab a dome dog. If they are expanding up they must also be expanding out- if the concourses are tripled in size there'd still be space for vendors around the periphery.
