Newton, where did that come from?

Watching his highlights this past year coming in - you could see he had game. The year prior there was a lot of questions about him and thoughts he was a longshot to ever get time but last year he was legit. Kid can ball.

We all know that JB values defense a ton. Woody made a big case for himself in this department. Not only that but the kid was very fundamentally sound. The old fashioned get your own miss play - warmed my heart personally. The kid understands the game very well and was obviously well coached coming onto campus.

Yeah, he was quick to follow that shot. That was nice.

I actually didn't love his film, which of course, probably says more about my evaluation skills than Woody or his film, but the fact remains. But he played really well tonight. I liked that he moved his feet really well on a possession or two at the top of the zone. Definitely a kid that probably earned himself a little look after tonight.

I hated his 2018-2019 film but summer 2019 through early 2020 he looked like a different player.

I really like Braswell and he may end up a JSouth type player here. But Woody showed me more tonight than Braswell has to date. That is how you earn PT, make a couple plays when you get a chance and look like you belong.

I like the CJ Fair comparison but how about Luke Jackson? Couldn't believe it when I noticed Woody up top in the zone.

My take is out there: Woody reminded me of Derrick Coleman! Not saying level of game, but he played with an "edge" and big motor that reminded me of DC. Even Woody's expression taking foul shots- "come on, I want to get back at it".
Don't expect agreement, but had to throw that take out there!
Because of JB"s quick hook, understand freshmen/backups appearing tentative/afraid to make mistakes.
Great to see a new guy introduce themself by playing with such a big motor and confidence.

The thing that impressed me about Woody is he seemed very fluid and smooth with his movement. It seems like with a lot of guys at that stage of their development and his size, what their minds want to do and what their bodies end up doing aren't exactly the same. But he looked very comfortable and in control with everything he tried to do.

Motor, confidence, versatility (playing at top of zone), and production - really nice start for a freshman. Have to temper that a little based on the level of competition and the fact that minutes are going to very hard to come by at the spot. Woody will need to consistently play exceptionally well to take any minutes from Q, Griff or Marek (when Sid gets back).

I think braswell looked terrible and he didn’t look like he has improved a lick in a year

I still unfortunately haven't been able to watch the games so far outside of the condensed game videos on YouTube, but this is awesome to hear. My take on Woody's tape was that he seemed to just not play hard in high school at all (he played in far more games than I could watch, but he just didn't seem to care in any of the ones that I did), but in the flashes where he did play hard, you could see he had potential to be a very strong defender (particularly 1 on 1, but he showed flashed of being a helpside shot-blocker too) with pretty good spot-up shooting at the other end. I think I likened him to Southerland if everything clicked for him but I was honestly very skeptical just because it was so rare to see him put the effort in in his games.

Great to hear he seems to be grinding so far in his limited college experience.

I think Woody may have to give the team 5-10 mins at SG in a few more games this season. I think he's up for it. Has the early look of the classic Cuse forward.

Woody can play Frank needs more playing time. JB just has to let these guys play.

He looked good last night for sure. When he adds a bit of muscle, look out.
I might have been most impressed w his defense at the top of the zone in the 2nd half - great movement and instincts and really long up there - loved watching that Newton/Richmond combo

He improved a lot after his junior year tape wise. So that could be the issue

The fact that JB went to him relatively early indicates that the kid has been performing well in practice and has gained some trust. Thus last night may not have been a fluke. He looked a lot more athletic and explosive off the floor than we had been led to believe. Also he had zero hesitation in taking and drilling the first shot of his career and that is a good sign. He wanted the ball but did not force his offense. Offensively he looks like a guy who has played a lot of basketball both in games and in practice and is a student of the game in terms of having good form and moving without the ball. He had a very good idea of what he was doing on defense.
Very early but Woody could be the type of player who contribute as a frosh, keeps working hard, continues to improve each year and is a huge part of the program's success for the next 3-4 years.
