Lets project some here and see where people are with their coach search expectations... In theory lets say
-Red Misses NCCAA tourney again but team improves its record
-Gerry leads Siena to MAAC title and NCAA tourney

Can only do 4 choices.. Other choice would be hire and Old Head with limited years like Pitino

Red needs to go. No to Gmac. No to Speedy Claxton and Matt Langel. We don’t need to hire a CAA coach. Langel is boring, not dynamic enough. We can get a successful mid-major coach from a better conference like the A-10. Schertz or Skinn.

And a big no to Holloway.

We need to hire a high level assistant from a kicka$$ D1 program. Someone who can recruit and bring an exciting brand of basketball back to the Dome. Most importantly, someone who can compete with the big boy coaches head to head.

And gotta keep our data guys around for the portal.

It’s none of the above. Basically we’re looking for momentum in a program before we steal them. The guy has to be a Head Coach in D1 and have taken a team to the tournament. It’s not like they need to have some crazy Cinderella story or some system or be some recruiting or portal expert.

It’s the principle that it’s tourney or bust very year in CNY. If they can do that and take a program that’s in the dumpster to the tourney immediately then they have my vote.

Always thought that G-Mac was in the pipeline but not ready at Jimmy B's overdue departure. It's almost as if Red was thrown into the fire to allow time for G-Mac to mature as a coach.
Truly not sure what is Red's offensive or defensive identity - even afer 2 1/2 years. As for a new coach, I think that the finance aspect (empty or low game attendances) will be the greater factor in prolonging Red, even if his record improves......fan attendance is directly link to the success and excitement of his game plan and wins...
Unfortunately, SU MBBalldoesn't seem to be a portal favorite unlike the FB team

How would you know if he can compete with big boy coaches if you hire an assistant?

Transfer portal rankings per 247

2025
Men’s Basketball- 36
Football- 47

2024
Men’s Basketball-52
Football-24

Kind of doing it at the same level in the transfer portal through the last two years.

If Gmac wins the MAAC and goes to the tournament he will get a hard look

What's really going to boil your guys' beans is one of lowly Niagara's two wins is against Binghamton.

Long time reader. First time poster. GMac is the obvious choice and the fact we’re pretending otherwise is insane. As long as he finishes the job at Siena and gets them to the NCAA Tournament. That’s the one box left to check and he’s already pushing the door down. 10 win improvement in Year 1, first Siena coach in 42 years to start 3-0, national finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award, and he built a roster from scratch that’s tied for first in the MAAC at 9-3.

And that’s before you even get to the Syracuse resume. 16 years on staff, nine NCAA Tournaments, two Final Fours, and a massive role in developing guards like MCW, Ennis, Battle, Buddy, Hughes and Swider. Add in his Northeast recruiting ties, his film room grind and the fact that players trust him. He’s been the backbone of this program for over a decade. He knows Syracuse. He’s proven he can run his own program. He bleeds Orange. This isn’t nostalgia it’s logic.

But he’s got to punch that ticket with Siena first. Do that, and there’s no debate left.
This has to be a troll

I wouldn't vote for any of their 4 choices nor your 5th choice. While I'd love to see GMac as our coach I don't think that is going to happen this soon. Why isn't a choice to hire an experienced (not Old) coach like Nate Oats? Why sell ourselves short? Maybe the money can be raised to do that. But why eliminate that as a possibility? That I would vote for. I'd suggest that your 4 or 5 choices sell ourselves short. We should be thinking more positively, starting of course with getting a new coach for next year.
