Next year Coach Decisions - poll

What Coaching direction would you like Syracuse basketball to head next

I wouldn't vote for any of their 4 choices nor your 5th choice. While I'd love to see GMac as our coach I don't think that is going to happen this soon. Why isn't a choice to hire an experienced (not Old) coach like Nate Oats? Why sell ourselves short? Maybe the money can be raised to do that. But why eliminate that as a possibility? That I would vote for. I'd suggest that your 4 or 5 choices sell ourselves short. We should be thinking more positively, starting of course with getting a new coach for next year.
The Nate Oats to SU ship has sailed. He wouldn’t want SU and we cannot afford him. Please stop, although it is amusing that some think it’s possible.

I get probably not him. But is there anyone out there about his age who is a successful coach that maybe we can get? I stipulated that it assumes we could raise the money to pay the coach. But my overall point is let's not limit a poll like this to small thinking.

I’m definitely not trolling. I’m laying out a straightforward argument based on what GMac has actually accomplished. The Siena turnaround is real, the resume at Syracuse is real and the idea that he should at least get them to the NCAA Tournament before being handed the keys is a perfectly reasonable standard.
I’m not trying to stir anything up. I just think if you look at the full picture, he’s earned the right to be in this conversation.
Gerry was on the same staff as Autry that was a part of the downward slide that we have seen in the last 10 years, no thanks. This is why a clean break from the Boeheim tree is necessary.

I think you got the orange goggles on. I live in the area and no one cares. Turning around a 4-28 program in the MAC doesn’t mean he can put Cuse in the tourney any time soon.

GMac has done more for Cuse hoops than almost anyone. I want him to have success but the timelines are not matching up to be an ACC head coach. He can work his way up for another 5-10 years or as long as it takes but it’s not a next year thing. Yes he can coach and yes he’s a good coach but this fanbase expects the hire to be a top 25 coach in the league or close to that and GMac isn’t that right now.

We gotta take emotion and vibes out of this decision.

No more assistants please. Even Bill Murray would ask haven’t we watched Groundhog Day. Why are you hiring my son an assistant to be HC when the last assistant hire failed.

Whoever the guy is has to hire a whole new staff and put together an entire roster from the portal and real damn fast. There’s not going to be any honeymoon in CNY. This town is desperate to win.

Too early for a poll. This team still has potential, although its performance since the Tennessee game has been disappointing. We beat Tennessee, and they beat Louisville...so maybe things will click?

I wasn't nearly as optimistic as most of you pre-season, but they do have some pieces. I honestly would not bet that they will fall in place, but I'm not ready to write them off...yet.

If GMac wasn't an alum would he be on anyone's radar for this job?

Is hiring a mid major or assistant automatically small thinking? (Or does it depend - perhaps you are looking for someone higher profile in the mid ranks than Claxton or Langel? ) Posted something similar on another thread.

Using KP rankings (only considering coaches hired since 2014, so I excluded #3, #6, #11)

#1 - Hired coach from Florida Atlantic
#2. Hired coach from UNLV / South Dakota St
#4. Hired assistant from Gonzaga
#5. Internal hire (assistant)
#7. Hired coach from Rhode Island
#8. Hired NBA assistant with no NCAA head coach experience
#9. Kelvin Sampson (hard to classify, since he had been largely run out of the NCAA for 7 years)
#10. Hired coach from James Madison
#12. First team that stole a P4 coach from another team
#13. Hired coach from San Francisco
#14. Hired coach from College of Charleston

Gerry- Head Coach
Hop- Top assistant
Arinze- Bigs
Whoever else Gerry wants
Mike Myers No GIF

If we cant get the HCs, Murray's son should def be a choice, hes a major reason Uconn has such a elite offense.

I just can’t believe people have watched the product on the court the last three years and still like I need to give it more time I think Red can coach. It’s like they refuse to believe what their eyes have shown them for three years

This poll just continues the negative vibes that’s effecting this year’s team.
I mean it’s no different than it was the last 2 years of JB’s tenure. This is basically professional sports now. If the team and coaches are capable they should have the ability to block this out.

I'm not sure anyone (or hardly anyone based on the poll above) thinks that. I hope we make the tournament because the team has some good players and I'd hate to waste someone like William Kyle's talent. It's a weird headspace to be in because there is still a tiny bit of hope of salvaging the season, unlike last year.

Long time reader. First time poster. GMac is the obvious choice and the fact we’re pretending otherwise is insane. As long as he finishes the job at Siena and gets them to the NCAA Tournament. That’s the one box left to check and he’s already pushing the door down. 10 win improvement in Year 1, first Siena coach in 42 years to start 3-0, national finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award, and he built a roster from scratch that’s tied for first in the MAAC at 9-3.

And that’s before you even get to the Syracuse resume. 16 years on staff, nine NCAA Tournaments, two Final Fours, and a massive role in developing guards like MCW, Ennis, Battle, Buddy, Hughes and Swider. Add in his Northeast recruiting ties, his film room grind and the fact that players trust him. He’s been the backbone of this program for over a decade. He knows Syracuse. He’s proven he can run his own program. He bleeds Orange. This isn’t nostalgia it’s logic.

But he’s got to punch that ticket with Siena first. Do that, and there’s no debate left.
Katie?

Lets project some here and see where people are with their coach search expectations... In theory lets say
-Red Misses NCCAA tourney again but team improves its record
-Gerry leads Siena to MAAC title and NCAA tourney

Can only do 4 choices.. Other choice would be hire and Old Head with limited years like Pitino
nate oaks, pitino. We should have gone after nate years ago
Any hurley
