HS students hiring agents and getting paid- OK. The NBA would not survive as a league if every year was a Wild West Bidding War for top NCAA players. That's why they have a draft. If most top HS players are mainly about the $ and will sign with top bidder regardless of what school that is, then maybe the NCAA should complete the "pro model" and figure out a way to set up a draft for the top (say) 100 HS players. The qualifying HS players would make an irreversible decision whether to throw their hat in for draft $. By opting out of the draft they can select the school of their choice -but with payment limited to a reasonable set annual NIL amount. Definition of reasonable would have to be determined, maybe a limit of $50K or (?). Of course bags could get around this -nothing is perfect. To participate in the draft, schools would be required to pay a substantial entry fee for the opportunity to draft a top 100 player. It could be a set fee with no limit on participating schools, or may be better to have an auction where only the top (say) 50 bidding schools participate. The draft order for the 50 schools could be based on bid amount: let the schools that want that first pick buck up for it, then pay that player the fat #1 pick "contract". Or draft order could be based on reverse final ranking of the schools that paid to participate in the draft. Lots of options -maybe spin a wheel so no school can know which option will be used and bid accordingly. Wouldn't that be fun! So in the 50 schools/100 players scenario, the best possible draft would be picks #1 and #51. Wouldn't that be interesting to see the talent spread out instead of a few teams stacked with MCD AA's? The salaries can be set, similar to the NBA rookie scale. Wouldn't that be fair to all, the goal of NIL? Drafted players would be paid relative to their draft status -top guys get the big $ just like the pros. What about the portal? Apply the same draft concept. Players would have to announce by a set date, and make the irreversible decision whether regarding do they want to chase "draft $" or select their next school under same terms as above. Sure this is nuts -but maybe not as nuts as what is going on now! It blows up this "NIL" madness for a different brand of madness -a different spectacle. Just some hot take rambling from a disgusted and maybe soon-to-be former college sports fan.
