No excuses for this years mediocre product

I’m not confident that we’ll get that clarity. We’ll almost certainly hire an up-and-comer. Maybe he’ll be the next Dan Hurley. Maybe he’ll be the next one of a thousand failures. There really are no sure things.

Now, what *would* provide clarity is if we hear about greatly increased NIL budgets, staff salaries, development facilities, etc. Those are the kind of sustainable investments that pay off in the long term, even when you misfire on a coaching hire.

I don't have a problem with an up-and-comer, so long as they have a proven track record of success. In fact, I think this is the most likely direction we'll go -- someone from a lower level [perhaps even 1AA or D2] or a smaller conference who has done well.

If they hire some assistant who's never been a head coach before, well...

The last game against Hofstra, there were 2-3 loose balls that featured multiple Hofstra players on the ground going after the ball. There were 0 Syracuse players on the ground going after the ball. They were flailing their arms at the ball, lunging for it, half-heartedly going after it.

What exactly does LEVEL 5 effort mean? It's all a schtick. And quite tiresome. Give me a break.
There were a couple times last night that they got outhustled to loose balls too. The out of bounds call that Mercyhurst challenged in the first half was a perfect example. Mercyhurst player goes all out and dives on the ground for loose ball while Fennel bends over at the waist to try and pick it up. Only reason Fennel ended up on the ground is because he fell over during the scrum. To me all the Cuse players should be diving for loose balls, but it is mind boggling that a guy that doesn't get a lot of playing time isn't doing whatever he can do to try to stay on the court.

Effort is a reflection of coaching, in my opinion.

This all sucks because I like many aspects of this team (especially looking back at last year). We should only have two losses right now trending towards a decent seed in the tournament. I'm not sold on George or Betsey, but collectively, we have the team that should make it in the tournament.

Red was defending the offense in the presser and said there is nothing wrong with the offense. As long as we make FTs we average 80ppg (he says)

I got about halfway through and I couldn’t take it. Either he’s clueless or a terrible communicator but it seems it might be both.

He's clearly not a very good communicator. As for the offense, every game Devo does, he says over and over that we need more motion and we settle for shots too early in our possessions. It's a broken record. It's obvious. Does Red really not agree with this??

How are we a top 10-15 program. Firing mid season makes no sense.

Well, that's subject to interpretation. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

That stated, if one adds the 101 W's that were bogusly taken away from JB (more importantly Syracuse University) fact is, SU is the 5th winningest program in Div 1 history. Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse.

I hate Will Wade, but listen to his presser last night and then listen to Reds. You’re playing to win, not to hurt people’s feelings.

From the first time Red spoke about his vision and then even after games his first year there were a lot of red flags and the kind of comments you saw from the likes of coaches like Payne who just wasn’t cut out out for it. I want no part of us pivoting to thinking someone like Gerry is a solution as I think GMac has more chops than Red long term but also reminds me a bit too much of what Hop was as a HC .

I think Red understands the game well and was damn good leading as a player but just doesn’t have what it takes as a coach and the signs have been there a while - we just badly wanted to see them fade with time , talent and experience which just isn’t going to happen unfortunately.

If he wasn’t a alumn he would be fired mid season. No top 10-15 basketball program should put up with what we are seeing on the floor. The fact we have to wait until the end of the season is a joke.
Are we really a 10-15 program anymore when we haven't been ranked in the regular season in over 10 years?

There is no scenario where the university will fire Red mid-season short of firing him for cause. Like it or not, he will be given the opportunity to play out the season.
And I think that’s totally fair! We accomplish little by actually firing a coach midseason as Scooch said. This isn’t the pros.

And… it’s not like we’re completely dead in the water here. Plenty of season left. I don’t have a lot of confidence we make the tournament (not talking play in) but the fact is, it’s not a guarantee we won’t.

Or UVA. Odom has them humming pretty good already.
Very much this. Somebody let JAB know too! After all, he’s gonna actually have to do at least one of his jobs and follow ACC hoops for ACCN.

Odom took over a program that was no where near where they were when Bennett was cooking. It’s taken him 10 months to turn it completely around. Not 5 years like the HOFer suggested. Boeheim continues to be a plague on the program, university, and community.

The good news about our program is if we were to get a good coach in here who gets us relevant again consistently, people would say we're back. They would quickly forget about how mediocre/bad we've been the last several years.
100%. And that's both exciting and frustrating. Certain people on the Hill have the power to swipe their pen and we could be competing for championships pretty much immediately. At least we know change is coming next year, just hope they make the right choice.

Has anyone in the administration or Athletic Department said or even suggested that if SU doesn't make the tournament this year Red is gone?

Wildhack said we had to be playing meaningful games in March and insiders have reported we need to make the tournament and win at least one game for him to be back.

no but JB just went on the air after hofstra and sad a coach need 4 or 5 years

I think in the old landscape of college basketball, that seems probably right. With the portal and NIL, things are much different. Besides, we know what we have and it's not cutting it.
Like at how quickly Odom and Wade have turned around UVA and NC State.

No reason that can’t be us a year from now if we get the right coach and the NIL is there

I don’t think it’s that difficult these days, actually. Every year there’s a few top mid-major coaches who are winning and clearly know what they’re doing and have proven it at that level, and it’s clear they will be able to win at the P5 level. A lot of those mid-major guys have succeeded in recent years at the P5 level (think Hurley, Oats, Todd Golden, Pat Kelsey, Otzelbeger, Grant McCasland, Chris Beard, Dusty May, Will Wade, Ryan Odom, Darian Devries, Ben McCollum…the last two are quietly turning around Iowa and Indiana in their first seasons). I think that’s because recruiting means less these days and you can retool and restock your program from the transfer portal very quickly.

The AD just needs to go out and land the top mid major guy who’s the right fit. Instead, some dumb ADs worry about winning press conferences and then hire alums, old retreads or NBA castaways like Mike Woodson, Kenny Payne, Hubert Davis, Jeff Capel, Kevin Stallings, etc. Of course SU will need to step up and promise Schertz or whoever that they will give them the NIL resources needed to get good players and succeed. That’s the key.
