You Wouldn’t Have Noticed If MLB Had Ties in 2018

I hold the controversial and allegedly "un-American" belief that ties in sports are fine. I certainly prefer them to gimmicky methods of breaking ties (e.g., shootouts, college football overtime) and contests that persist for so long, they merely become battles of attrition where results seem random (e.g., extra inning games when position players are used as pitchers, six-overtime basketball games that end with Kris Joseph playing center). The linked article suggests that ties would have had little impact on the 2018 MLB season. Of course, we don't know if teams would have made different in-game decisions with no extra-innings.

It might actually lead to more pitching changes in a game. Teams would no longer need to save a long man in case of extra-innings.

In a tie-game in the bottom of the 9th, the home team could pinch hit without worrying about defense.

the 3 batter thing wont come into play that much. it goes away when the inning is over, all it does is try to limit the 1 batter specialist and i am all for that

Just use the WBC extra innings rule.
Starting in the 11th inning start the inning with a guy on 2nd base 0 outs.
That will stop games from going 15+ innings.

You play to win the game. If your best matchup against Power-Hitting-Lefty is a lefty out of the bullpen, then you make the move. Then when he gets that guy out, he fakes a hamstring injury. Bye bye rule

The minimum 3 batter rule does have an out. If you bring a pitcher in with 1 or 2 outs all they have to do is finish the inning and you can replace them.
The intent of the rule is prevent just out specialist with 0 or 1 outs.

I prefer a tie. I don’t need to play a different game just to declare a winner.

A four-overtime game between the Bulls and Hawks in the NBA regular season felt unnecessary. Would anyone care if that game was just a tie?

So easy to prevent this. They'd just mandate anyone removed from such a situation due to injury must be put on the injured list (no longer disabled list due to bs)

it also ignores the results those extra innings had on games the following days.. using all the pitchers may hurt a team for 1-2 days following

Maybe managers need to think about that before going to their bullpen in the 4th inning with 2 outs because someone just reached first base on an infield single on the pitcher's 80th pitch.

Plus you have a minor league system to swap guys out.

This is typical overreaction. Nothing wrong with the way it is now.

(not quite oh my god the All Star game was a tie one time in a blue moon so we have to do something about it overreaction, but still).

Count me in the camp that hates the amount of meddling that's going on with the rules of baseball at the moment.

It's not broke, so don't try to fix it.

What changes have they actually made? I cannot think of any significant changes MLB has made recently.

The DH is all but inevitable at this point. The extra inning rule will also go into effect within the next few years. Manfred also talking about pushing the mound back? He’s meddling way too much.

But he hasn't actually made any changes. None of this has been decided. How can you say that he is meddling too much?

Because you know as well as I do that half of these proposed changes are going to be implemented, all for the sake of making the game more accessible for the younger generation. Anything to speed the game up. But baseball wasn’t broken to begin with.

I don’t know that. I’ve seen MLB make few changes in my 42 years

I am glad these discussions are happening and I am glad they are testing ideas in an independent league. I do know that MLB is slow to change so I’m not concerned about decisions being made hastily.

How would you advance a winner into the next game of a tournament?

It’s for regular season record. It’s actually not a bad idea although as a baseball purist, I shudder at the thought.
