No further Big 12 expansion for 2012 according to Chuck Neinas

Neinas sees no further Big 12 expansion for now, expects W. Viriginia in league in 2012

"I don't anticipate there's going to be a movement off 10," Neinas said. "It could happen down the road, but we definitely won't be beyond 10 for 2012-2013 and there is strong feeling within the membership that 10 provides the opportunity for round-robin in football and you play everyone in basketball twice ..."

That's what was said earlier. 10 in 2012. He also affirms that WVU will play in 2012.

Wow.

Some reflection and sense on remaining at 10 while rejecting at least for now the chance to make more money as a 12 member conference.

You don't see that too often.

"It could happen down the road, but we definitely won't be beyond 10 for 2012-2013..."
In short: "the conference and all programs have seen how crazy it is to get schools to change conference affiliations on short notice. We're done for 2012-13, but will start disrupting in time for 2013-14 shortly. Why? Because we're arrogant bullies. Those ACC & Big East guys are just way too soft!"

All it means is BYU and Louisville will wait to start in 2013.

The question is this - is it worth it?

Would the Big 12 teams rather play round-robin in football and play twice each year in BB or add Louisville and BYU?

If I'm a Big 12 team, I think I'd rather go with the former rather than the latter.

If I am anyone not named Texas I want 12 teams. It keeps the conference strong. What if Texas leaves for the P12 or B1G? Would you rather be left behind in a conference that is still better than the BE and raid the BE for replacements? Or would you rather be in a conference that is on par with the BE, meaning you could be raided by the BE? It would be about survival.

For all schools not named Texas (and possibly Oklahoma), the answer is "yes".
It means more $.

Texas saw what their arrogance wrt LHN led to. This may be the only time that the other 8 have a chance to push further expansion through. It protects them from potential further departures and (as much as you don't want to hear it) it further damages the NNBE. The latter point isn't too important today, but could be for potential Big XII left-behinds... they weren't too comfortable when the most recent shakeup went down.

It might be a silly point...but I think a conference that calls itself the Big 12 will get back to 12 teams. Both Louisville and BYU are slam dunks and I bet they can't resist. If the TV nums dictate I bet they expand...I think it will as it adds two decent sized markets. Cincy I figure is the backup. The 'Girls are just too far away and their national appeal is minimal.

"..."That seems to be appealing to the conference members. To go beyond that will take a lot of research and hard thinking."

They were just at 12 teams for how many years? How much research and hard thinking do they need?

I wonder what "down the road" means. Since they were able (apparently) to strongarm WV out of the BE on short notice, will they be happy to take that approach again with Louisville? They already know that they could sign up BYU almost immediately if both sides were willing.

If they had any plans to "play nice", now would be the time to announce new teams for the 2013 season. Maybe the hard thinking is do we make an announcement before or after signing day?

The Big 12 currently is an extremely close knit regional conference, with 6 teams in Texas/OK and 2 in Kansas, 1 in Iowa. They did very well this year in football and in their TV deals by not losing big dollars.

I really question the assumption that UL or Cincinnati are great adds in terms of football competition, TV dollars or where they want to play their non-football sports compared to the benefits of staying regional at 10.

Congratulations to WVU but they are/will be as isolated in the Big 12 (at 10) as BC was in the 2003 ACC.

Good news for the Big East in that it gives them time to add their new teams and see what TV deal they can get.
