Sorry its year 4 and there are no more moral victories. SU blew it today. That WAS a late hit at the end, refs made a good call. The player gave himself up and was running out of bounds, no need to even touch him! Special teams was awful once again (shocking). We still can't hire a full time special teams coach? Really? REALLY? REALLY!!!!

Poor coaching on the backwards pass and the players NOT knowing it was a live ball. Trying for a play for some odd reason at the end of the first quarter and getting a penalty when they could have not run a play at all and just walked off the field. Poor coaching again. Calling timeout on the extra point, stupid! The play was automatically reviewed you didn't need to give them any extra time.

When you out-gain your opponent 2-1 basically in yards and still lose, that is coaching. Doug seems like a decent enough guy, is good with some aspects of the job, but overall as a head coach he is in way over his head. Terrible "game day/sideline" head coach. Just terrible.

New Year; Same Result! No more excuses. No more Moral Victories.

They will lose to USC. Beat Stony Brook. Those next couple games after that he is coaching for his life. Doug can't survive a 2 or 3 win year. He just can't. 37,000 today is terrible attendance; for Stony Brook he will be lucky to get 25,000! No winning, No fans=Trouble!

I've been patient with marrone, but I agree with you. Special teams was atrocious.

But it WAS NOT a late hit

It was a bad play all around

And since HE himself is the special teams coach HE must be held accountable! '

Nobody else to throw under the bus! Doug isn't cutting it.

He's lost 6 straight and likely 7 after #1 USC. But after they beat Stony Brook he should get a multi-year extension.

If they give him an extension at any point during the season they are nuts. Nobody is going to games now as is, it will only get worse if they announce he is coming back and the team is under .500

Shut up. Seriously, shut up. SHUT UP. I quit on Doug Marrone for a while today. But the team didn't quit, pack it in, and go home. They'd played it out. It was a heartbreaking loss, but it was still a fun game.

But there were FOUR O-Linemen who played their first game ever. There was an athletic QB and a really good PR who will give many teams many problems.

There were breaks didn't go our way today. Sometimes all of the best coaching in the world can;t create good breaks.

If Sales holds on to that ball and Krautman hits that 44 yard field goal, there's no discussion.

Sometimes, we don't need hyperbole or negativity. We lost a great game because of a number of reasons. You think NW fans are calling for Pat Fitzgerald's head after blowing a 22 point lead?

I know you love to be negative. But seriously, this is the wrong game to call for HCDM's head.

Whoever picked that group for KO Return needs a Job reevaluation

That was absolutely a late hit. No question about it. No reason to touch that guy at all. This wil lgo down with the other great Su pollyanna debate: PI vs Tenn. Which it was.

44cuse

It's funny you mention that because I may have got 15 texts (many from non SU fans) saying we got screwed right after it happened. It's funny how people interpret the same play so differently. Live it looked like a ridic call but i haven't seen a replay

"Anyone else see the problem with this sentence (and thought), "When you out-gain your opponent 2-1 basically in yards and still lose, that is coaching."

We out gained a Big 10 opponent 2-1 and lost on mental errors and the problem is coaching? What was the coach's role in creating the offense that put all those yards up?

Was definitely not a late hit as Lynn engaged him a yard in bounds. If anything the shove was unnecessary but was not a late hit.

The SU guy didn't hit Siemian, but the shove was entirely unnecessary and could have caused an injury due to the player tumbling into an obstacle. If the SU defender had to shove him to avoid a collision that would have been different. Refs are especially protective of QBs, for good reason.

It was the correct call, given the shove when both feet were OOB. It just didn't have a flagrant nature to it, and given the timing people expect refs to swallow their whistles.

During BB season, however, we expect the refs to call all 40 minutes the same. Maybe FB has an unwritten rule that BB doesn't

Even if we disagree over the late hit call it doesn't change the plethora of other mistakes by Doug and SU. Doug gift-wrapped this one for Northwestern!

I purposely waited to post, and Stern, you make alot of good points.
Bottom-line, I'm just tired of losing. Point blank, period.
This is becoming a pattern with HCDM teams- the "if only we'd have..." excuses at the end.
ie: "If Bailey doesn't fumble at the 3 vs Rutgers"...etc. etc.
Again...I'm just tired of losing. Oh Lord

I really don't see a problem with the sentence/thought. One could simply conclude that based upon the numbers, we won the physical battle, in the trenches, etc. due to better overall talent. However, not playing under control, making poor decisions, etc. are all due to lack of discipline...something, whether it's fair or not, generally will always fall back on the coaching. It is the coaches responsibility to prepare the kids not only physically, but mentally too. These similar type mistakes have become a trend every year, the perception is, it's more than just an anomaly.

I think it's a silly post and depends on the old military concept that everything is the coach's (or commander's responsibility). So any shortcoming or mistake is their fault. I think that's brain-dead philosophy.

The offense that produced all those yards was designed by the coaching staff. The players that gained all those yards were selected and trained by the coaching staff.

You're right about one thing--there are no moral victories. The only thing that counts are W's and L's.

But the rest of your post is pretty dumb. Typical bombastic drivel.

Not really old military. No different than a leader of any organization today being ultimately responsible for the success of its group/corporation. It's not to say that the employees do not share with the culpability/ownership of their actions, etc...but, ultimately, it goes back to the top.

That's fine--no argument there about ultimate culpability / responsibility. But that is different than ranting and raving about the coaches being responsible for every negative outcome on the field that happens during individual plays in the heat of the moment. Some of it is coaching, some of it is execution. And yes--I realize there is overlap.

Trying to spin this so Doug comes out with his hands clean...those days are over. This is on him now! Call it what you want, but Doug is coming up short on too many occasions. Can't blame GROB forever!
