No Moral Victories anymore

Trying to spin this so Doug comes out with his hands clean...those days are over. This is on him now! Call it what you want, but Doug is coming up short on too many occasions. Can't blame GROB forever!

Who said anything about GRob?

It was a missed opportunity--no doubt. But the sky isn't falling, despite your temper tantrum attempt to paint it that way.

Now anyone that disagrees with you is throwing a temper tantrum? LOL LOL

Nope. Just pointing out that you are up to your usual sensationalist, over-reactive tactics. LOL LOL

Nope.I was pretty spot on and a bunch of people agree with me. Sorry you don't.

REALITY is that there is no way in hell this team only wins 2-3 games. None whatsoever.

If that's what you believe is this team's potential, then you are even more clueless than I originally thought.

Wow.
Just like after starting 5-1 last year and blew out WV no way they don't find a way to win 1 more in a god awful conference...sure ok! Hope I am wrong and you are right but we will see.

Care to wager on 2-3 wins, as you've repeatedly insisted?
What is probably true is if we lose to SB the drumbeat will start and it will take a lot to drown it out.

Let's take this up a level in civility.

This is nothing like last year's 5-1, where we struggled every game and the offense looked terrible, and we got lucky to win 3 of those games and could easily have lost every game we won [other than WVU]. Honestly, if you didn't see a different level of offensive execution today, then I'm not sure what to say.

As for the rest of the season, here's what I predict: 0-2 start [obviously]. We blow out SB with Pugh getting reintegrated on OL. We win big on road @ Minnesota to even the record. October is huge. Need to go 3-1 against Pitt / Rut / Uconn, and I believe based upon what we saw today that we can and will accomplish that. We close against Temple--another team I believe we can beat.

This is a bowl caliber team, not a 2-3 win team.

If we lose to SB, then I'll lead the lynch mob.

And if we win, despite SB's track record of success at their level, everyone will say that we should have beaten them anyway and that it is meaningless.

God bless ya and I hope you are right. I see SU struggling vs Minny. BIG10 team on the road won't be easy. Not with SU's special teams and the way they tackle. After SU failed miserably in the BE last year I can't say any game is a "given" inside the conference. I don't see SU going to a bowl this year when all is said and done. Whether that's 2 wins, 4 wins, 5 wins...it ain't gonna be a bowl. HOPE I AM WRONG!!

SU struggled with Rhode Island last year (21-14), I can't even say Stony Brook is a given.

Agree to disagree--I'll leave it at that! : ) Hell or high water, we're getting to 6 wins this year.

Minnesota sucks. We are going to roll them. I don't think that any game is a "given," but unlike the recent past--where we couldn't move the ball for or put points on the board--I don't see that being an issue this year. I think that the offense is going to get better and better, and that some of the flaws on defense will similarly get better. ST was a huge letdown today--at least in terms of coverage. Can that improve? Stay tuned.

See what I mean?

Not really. I don't expect us to struggle against SB. I think we are going to be fine against them, unlike how we've played against teams like RI in recent years. I think that we are a different offense this year, with the ability to move the ball and score points--neither of which we could do the last couple of years. I liked what I saw today from the OL, and I think that the weapons will only improve when Lemon, Stevens, and Pugh return.

There is no way we are going to stub our toe against SB. Doesn't mean that they aren't quality, or that we are going to dominate them. But I expect that to be a tune-up type of game.

Again, if we lose, then I--a huge Marrone believer--pledge to lead the charge to get him ousted. No joke.

It's funny you mention that because I may have got 15 texts (many from non SU fans) saying we got screwed right after it happened. It's funny how people interpret the same play so differently. Live it looked like a ridic call but i haven't seen a replay

When you see the replay...it's not debatable.

And honestly (I saw the one against us more times), ithougt they MISSED the that would have benefitted us on the next drive. Big time.

But I had people saying: " don't hit him! )$&!"

There was a second in there for everyone to call it out. It was that bad.

44cuse

I saw the replay and it's certainly debatable. If im a ref there, That call doesn't get made. Unfortunately I wasn't the ref there.

Well, I meant that IF we lose to SB there will be a revolt - mobs with torches in the street. I think we will kick their butts but nothing is certain. I am a huge DM fan but I also know what could happen. It would be a shame because we really are on the right rack now.

i really hope that this game opened their minds to throwing downfield. if you throw sideways 20 times, some of them are going to go backwards. i hate incomplete passes that turn into fumbles far away from the endzone. I am fine with incomplete passes that turn into incomplete passes close to the endzone. basically 2 of NW's scores came from sideways passes gone awry. we throw so many passes with the entire defense between us and the goal line. people think of that as a low risk passing offense but it isn't. take shots downfield, cornerbacks suck when the ball is in the air, you get penalties and you'll get fewer fumbles. you might get more picks but if you're getting no interceptions, you're not trying.

really a tale of two games when they started trying to take shots. keeping the ball in bounds is huge for nassib

"Anyone else see the problem with this sentence (and thought), "When you out-gain your opponent 2-1 basically in yards and still lose, that is coaching."

We out gained a Big 10 opponent 2-1 and lost on mental errors and the problem is coaching? What was the coach's role in creating the offense that put all those yards up?

Your best post ever.

Regarding coaching, the special teams criticism should rest with the players. I didn't want to post this before rewatching the game, but the two long punt returns didn't have anything to do with coaching.

On the touchdown, #47 had Mark dead to rights but started dancing around like me out there and didn't make the tackle. Reddish got hit in the back. Mark was off to the races, made #62 and a couple other Syracuse guys look silly.

On the second long one, Reddish left his lane. He moved inside; Mark moved outside and found himself with 50 yards of green in front of him. That's Marrone's fault? You think that Reddish wasn't coached to keep his lane?

A handful of people on here are going to blame the coaches for anything that goes wrong. Nothing that happened on special teams yesterday indicates that anything is wrong with the coaching. Mistakes by Syracuse players and good running by the Northwestern returner. Pretty simple.

Had #47 run through the play he should have had him. I saw DM giving him an earful as they walked off of the field.

The Reddish block in theback is because he lost containment. Had he stayed in his lane the NW guy would never have had that block. Same thing on the second long one as well. He needs to be schooled hard on this all week.

Good points. Reddish didn't stay disciplined on either of those. He's a good one; I don't anticipate he'll make those mistakes in coming weeks.

As I exited the Dome, I felt as though this game was a critical loss that would probably cost us a Bowl game, but after much reflection, I feel like the fate of this team rests upon the players' desire to win. This team has definitely improved upon its strength, speed, skill, & brutality(some of those hits were bone rattling!).

In addition, the Big East is really not a very intimidating conference anymore. Syracuse has the chance to beat each & every conference foe, & probably will win a majority of those games.

Next week is a great challenge & a terrific measuring stick to gauge this squad's strength & skill. To expect a win against USC is unrealistic. To hope for a win is required. I hope for an entertaining & highly competitive affair.

We forget, this team was 5-2 going into the home stretch, & proceeded to lose their last 5 games. The chances of a repeat performance like this is prohibitive. I remember a few years where some of the better Syracuse teams came into week 3 winless, so this strange game is no true indicator of the record we can expect from the ORANGE.
