No Tight plays ?

We won' by 20 on the road using very little of our playbook (not that we actually have one.) Coming off a 1 win season can't we just be happy with that?
Maybe we should have done something different last season; like throw a few to our tight ends.

But here's the thing... we've been hoping to see more looks from this offense for 5 years now and it's never happened. Even when we have had success it was more due to having a beast of a wr to throw to or having a QB who could make plays w/ his feet. What makes this year any different?
This x200

Looks like Dino really misses Sean Lewis. Gilbert was starting to call different plays near the end of last year, hopefully he’ll start to change it up.

ACC coaches have said we run a very simple system and it sure seems like it

The one that worked?
I'm not saying it was a bad thing. They were dominating the DLine. If I was them I would have ran that play an additional 20 times.

Hackett would’ve liked that.
We’ll see if Sean Lewis has some thrown his way this season.

we have to kiss(keep it simple stupid) when ol was/is a question

All these excuses, “We scored 20 against Ohio, what more do you want?, do we really know if the tight ends can catch the ball?, just wait it is going to change.”

It would be nice for us to pass the ball to Benson. He can catch and is fast. He caught the ball as a true Freshman. I for one would also like to see Benson and other tight ends utilized more. That is all I am saying. No more, no less.

Our 40ppg season was without Sean.

Pretty sure Gilbert has had multiple 40ppg years also as OC (actually did >40 with DFB @ EIU once, 30 @ BGSU with DFB, and hit 38 @ USF and 32 @ Texas).

Oh yeah that’s right, my bad. Maybe it was just ED but it just seemed like the offensive play calling was more dynamic the first few years Dino was here. Hopefully Gilbert will really get us rolling

Did you watch the game on Saturday?

Twice.

I’m happy for the win and if we win six games this year rushing for 250 + and passing for only 100 yards I’ll be very excited to go bowling.

I guess we’ll have to see if our OL can dominate ACC DL’s like we did Ohio. For the most part Ohio DB’s had great coverage on our WR’s. I don’t think I saw one reception were our guy was wide open. That leads me to believe the DB’s weren’t confused by any of our formations/routes

Now watch games from previous seasons and you’ll see that we ran a bunch of different stuff just within our base offense.

What excites me is that the run blocking was excellent, our QB made good decisions running the ball, and the play action worked. All that success running is banking better offense fir the future. If they can block, the offense won’t be stagnant

The run blocking was great. Ohio fans were blaming covid for not being so good against us because they only played three games last year so who knows…

I’m not sure how much we ran out of our base offense but it didn’t look like Ohio was ever confused of who to cover and their MAC DB’s seemed to have a good game. We just overpowered them which probably won’t happen in the majority of ACC games

I have a feeling we’ll know better where we stand after Rutgers.

Not to say coaches don't have certain blind spots but do people honestly believe that the coaching staff is not aware of the talent the players have and how to deploy it? They see them every day at practice and on tape. Would I like to see the TE used a bit more dynamically? Sure. That doesn't mean we have Gronk on our sidelines waiting to catch 90 balls for 15 td's. I feel pretty confident that the staff discuss who can contribute and how for the most part. I also think its been 1 game folks so far this season. To repeat 1 game, not 10...not 7...not 5. Let's give them 3 or 4 games and see who is doing what before we start howling about what they should be doing perhaps?

We just didn’t throw that much. When we did Tommy had 65% completion percentage.

bottom line, your original post said we were running the same offense and it was too simple. But things have changed, the offense looks different IMO. I’m saying we didn’t need to complicate anything and we won using base plays. More is coming.

I agree that Rutgers will be a good test of that theory.

Yep, people need to check their Sean Lewis timeline

But we did beat #2 Clemson and #17 VT with Sean Lewis so his offense must have been ok…

He’s also the only assistant coach hired away to be a HC since I don’t even know when

This subject really is the ultimate meme of the football board. It persists through coaching, personnel and system changes
