I think it’s likely that the difference in offensive output could at least be *partially* explained by poor OL play. And then maybe a bit more by the old OC.

We might be closer than we think. Like I’ve been saying, there is no world where we should be favored based on last year. But - that doesn’t mean we are that far away either

North Carolina did not have a great offensive line last year, and this isn’t to pile on Tommy but he is no where as good as Howell.

We had the worst OL in the P5. I agree that I don’t think he’s as good... but it’s really hard to tell.

I’m saying the gap isn’t as much as most would think based on w/l, hype, etc

That's not piling on. He isn't near as good. Howell faced tons of pressure last year too but made plays and didn't throw the ball away but rather kept plays alive.

He had a much better line. They can run the ball. I would say they had a mediocre OL, while ours was bad for 9 weeks

The problem we have as Syracuse fans is that we have hyped Devito so much that we don’t really know what the truth is, especially after the O-line debacle last year and his injury.
Hopefully he can show us this year that the hype was for good reason.

Devito and Howell are 95 apart in the PFF rankings (4 vs 99) which is a bit of a stretch.

You‘re making my point. There’s no way DeVito is 99 with a better line. And no way Howell is 4 with our early 2019 line. Just how much of a gap remains is the question.

I agree that we overhyped him to an extent.

That's why it was hilarious. The entire time we thought it was the D that was going to be a bit shaky given the youth and new system, going against the UNC O. And our defense absolutely killed it (for most of the time when it mattered). And yet, UNC still covered because our O scored 6 points. The game went completely off script and they still covered. I think that's funny.
 
defence was gassed becuase of the putrid offense. They did a great job. They'll need to pitch shutouts if we plan on winning games this year.

You’re right, they are not 23 points better than us. They are 25 points better than us. If not for NC’s mistakes, they would have won by 40 or more. They were far superior on both sides of the ball. We actually beat this team two years ago and now they beat the crap out of us. It’s called recruiting. This current class is still at the bottom of the conference, yet people here thinks it’s a great class. It is what it is.

Short term memory. North Carolina was on the verge of winning in regulation in the Dome. Dungey benched and Devito led the comeback for them to win in OT. Of course, he had a better line in front of him, Ravian Pierce and Jamal Custis to sling it to.

UNC wasn't far superior on both sides of the ball. They were held in check until the defense was gassed. Syracuse's mistakes left the door wide open and UNC took advantage. SU should have gone into halftime with a double digit lead.

Re: recruiting. Carolina has always recruited well compared to SU. A 3* out of Carolina > a 3* out of NY/NJ. Fedora crashed the ship in his final years. Posters here underestimated UNC based off of their 6-6 record last season. They were never out of a game and if not for a questionable play call, they beat Clemson.

Mack is a great recruiter because he is always genuine, no BS, no slick selling. Parents and HS coaches know that immediately and respect it, and they nudge kids to him.
