Class of 2014 Noah Beh, DE

BOB could be an NFL HC right now if he wanted to. Definitely not one foot out the door.

you think he wanted to coach the Bills, Cards, Browns, or Chargers? I can see him leaving within the next couple years

He was the frontrunner for the igglz, though, right?

I figured I would hopefully add some insight to some of these posts:

"How are they recruiting?": Penn State has two unique advantages right now that they are trying to leverage. First, HC Bill O'Brien and Assistant HC
Stan Hixon both have good NFL experience. It turns out that most prospects are much more interested in playing in the NFL than a bowl game. In fact, the bowl ban has been the least significant of our sanctions, especially in recruiting. The second, and more important (but less often considered) advantage - if you can call it that - is our scholarship reductions. Because PSU is targeting only about half as many kids as most staffs, coaches have been able to spend twice as much time with each prospect. In recruiting, the most important thing is often relationships, and the PSU coaches have been able to build deeper relationships with their targets because they can afford to spend more time with them.

As for Beh's position, he was recruited as an OT for PSU. He will be the only OL they take in this class (unless a JUCO can enroll early and count against PSU's class of 2013).

As for O'Brien leaving, he has made it clear that if an NFL job opens up and they have a quarterback that he believes can excel in the NFL, he will listen. His problem with the coaching offers he has had (the most prominent of which was actually Jacksonville, which he chose Penn State over) is that he has not felt like he could win with any of their QBs. His dream job is also the Patriots, as his family and his wife's family are from the area. The interesting twist to him moving is that he has a severely disabled son who needs constant care to survive, so moving was apparently difficult for him and his family, and he allegedly does not want to put his son through another move if he can avoid it (a la Chris Petersen at Boise State).

Anyways, hope those thoughts answer some questions on this board. I appreciate you all letting me lurk around - I'm a Penn State student but a CFB fan, and I love reading every team's message board. Good luck this year...after week one :)

This actually is a very good point. It does give some advantage with recruiting the "cream" of your class, because you can spend twice as much time focusing on 12-15 recruits as you can 25. The challenge with this is that your depth is going to be severly limited and if you run into a rash of injuries its going to hurt on the field.

Great post and all makes alot of sense, not to mention that PSU is still a great university with a huge following. As for JUCO's, that will be an option for PSU for previous classes, but I am not sure they have a slot left from last year to fill. They already had 17 recruits, 2 over the 15 allowed with no JUCO's and only 1 POST. This will be the first year PSU will really start to feel the scholarship loss, especially has the roster gets further taxed by injury as well.

i don't think its about bowl games. i know every kid wants to be or thinks they're going to get to the next level. the reality is they probably wont and they'll be suffering through 3-8 seasons to boot. And the fact is, it's tough to 'make a pro', most kids with pro potential would probably get to the pros whether they were playing football at penn state or appalachian state.

I agree, but O'Brien isn't going to tell kids that.

And regarding how many kids Penn State can recruit - they had 17 sign last year, but 5 were early enrollees. So, that means that Penn State can sign 15+ 3 EEs this year (JUCOs are almost always EEs).

The limiting factor in how many kids Penn State can/will take will not be the 15-per-year, but rather the 65 total. Especially since kids that leave the team still count against that 65, unless they play at another school or leave for medical reasons. Penn State is already limited to 62 players because three players left football but are still taking classes. Luckily, two of them graduate this year, but the other will only be a sophomore and, thus, count against the scholarship limit for each of the next three years.

Anyways, I don't want to talk too much about PSU football on the SU board, but I figured some may be interested in this particular thread. Good luck this year.

Great post overall. Well stated. I did take issue with this point though... While we too will be breaking in a new starting QB this year, I feel we're in a better position than PSU, unless BOB decides to go against Hackenburg and his family's wishes and starts him as a true freshman. The playing field will be very close to even with our running games dictating the flow of the game. I think we win, but that's just because I wear orange colored shades..
