Noel "not feeling" UConn

Goodman isn't counting out UNC.

GIANTS
UNC, to their credit, doesn't go after one-and-dones. Keep in mind that Goodman has been pretty negative about SU this year. Doesn't believe they are in the top 4 elite teams and isn't a big believer in the program or JB.

They dont? Harrison Barnes was projected as a one and done. They recruited A. Davis heavy.

It's between Kentucky and Syracuse. It's been known all along. If he goes to Providence I'll be very, very, surprised. UConn was never in it.

Syracuse - 47%
Kentucky - 47%
Providence - 5%

1% Rutgers. Rutgers Al plans to build a wall around his hotel room on his next AAU game near Jersey. He will write him poems entitled how "Big Nerlens Noel" will lead them to a top 8 finish in the Big East!

As a UCONN fan, I assume you have seen and heard Kevin Ollie speak near a microphone. It ain't pretty. He may turn out to be a great coach, but that is not the image a public university likes to put on display.

I have heard him behind the mic, I have spoken at length with him and I have heard him speak to a group. He was fine aside from behind the mic, but let's be honest, he would be replacing Calhoun, speaking behind a mic should be the least of anyone's concern.

Actually he lacks any type of coaching experience. He may be the next great coach, but if you are a program at the Elite level, I don't know that you want to throw the keys to a guy who hasn't even completed his second year in the coach's chair.

His NBA experience is nice, but doesn't have a lot of bearing on whether or not he will be fit to run a Division I program that is going to be in a huge transition period - replacing a HOF coach, trying to determine where its ultimate conference home will be, etc., etc.

In this day and age there is a heckuva lot more to the job than just Xs and Os and recruiting.

All I can say is as a Cuse fan I am completely comfortable with UConn selecting Kevin Ollie as their next Head Coach.

The conference home will be decided by whoever eventually takes over as the AD and President Herbst (assuming she is at UConn). To that note, Ollie has a great relationship with Herbst. Considering the conference alignment will be/has been driven by football, I doubt very much the amount of input the UConn head basketball coach will have. How much did Boeheim have? Or Dixon?

Head coaching is more than X's and O's and recruiting in this day and age? Not sure what has been added? There is NCAA, media, hiring assistants, relationships with AD's and Presidents of the University, but all those existed before. I guess there is keeping rich alumni happy, esp. those that have close ties to the basketball program, like all the NBA guys (but they love Ollie). There is knowing AAU teams/organizations, but Ollie does.

If he can keep one of the 3 ex-head coaches (Blaney, Miller, Hobbs) in the George Blaney role or hire someone like Dave Leito he should be fine.

On the flip side, how confident are you as a Cuse fan having Mike Hopkins take over? Whenever you lose a HOF coach other teams will rejoice until the replacement proves himself.

That is just wrong, they aren't really in it now, but they were.

Well I never want the HOFer to retire...but when he does I will be excited for Mike. He's the right guy.

Ollie or Calhoun aren't likely to have much input into UConn's ultimate conference home. Likely Herbst or the ultimate AD won't have that much input either. If there is an invitation to a conference that has a stronger traditional football side, they'll go. If there isn't an invitation they won't go. My point is that it's one more unknown for the basketball program to deal with, overcome and sell to recruits.

Noone is 100% confident in Hop, how can we be he's never had the role of Head Coach at Syracuse? But, he has had the opportunity to be an understudy to a master long enough to have learned quite a bit. He's also proven to be a tremendous recruiter and has generally shown to have a personality that will satisfy alums and everyone else that matters. So as a Syracuse fan you have to be about as confident as you can be (without having him actually have done it) that when it comes time for JB to step aside Hop will do a great job.

Not sure how anyone that is an impartial observer can be so confident in Ollie. That is not to say that he won't be successful, maybe he will be. But with all of the challenges that UConn is likely to face, I would put the job in the hands of someone with a track record if I were the AD. That said, maybe JC will be back and be around for many years yet and give Ollie time to build up that experience as an assistant.

They have probably 3 openings in their front court next year, so they could guarantee some early PT.

I wonder who UConn hires if Calhoun is done. Probably an outside guy, because I am not familiar with anyone on their staff.
Maybe they will emulate their football program and hire an old SU cast off:

HCBF?

I misread that part, or it was a bit unclear, whatever.

Put Ollie and UConn in there instead of Hopkins and Syracuse and that's how I feel except replace the red part with NBA coaches (Larry Brown, Jim O'brien, George Karl, Paul Silas, and Scott Brooks being notable) and a hall of fame college coach.

Again, he may need a George Blaney type assistant (Hobbs, Leito, Miller would all fit the bill) to get used to the ins and outs of college coaching but in terms of player development, recruiting, game prep and alumni/AD/President relations, I feel he would be fantastic. Others disagree, which is fine because there is no way of proving it either way at this point.

But honestly the most important thing is that the Jims sign off on their respective replacements.

This is kind of putting the cart before the horse for UConn, unlike Syracuse, UConn has not named him the coach in waiting. It is just the current rumour mill and speculation (though it has been gaining some steam).

LOL, though does that mean UConn basketball finishes ahead of Syracuse in the conference standings? :p

Seriously not a fan of Coach P. though. It was an uninspired/safe hire at best.

80% of being a successful college coach in BB or FB is recruiting. You have to bring in talented players. There are tons of great X-O guys who have been complete busts because they lack the "salesmanship" aspect of being able to recruit or they feel above it.

Talent isn't as big a factor in basketball, as it is football.

Butler got the title game 2 years in a row, and they don't have much talent.
