Northwestern 9/1 12:00 ESPN2

So wouldn't that make you downstate folks a bunch of "maroons" also considering you care about pro football more and you're playing your games on Sundays?
games are sold out.

with a waiting list.

no matter what day or time they play them.

no crying.

Oh Lord

Not to pad myself on the back but this exactly what I predicted. Week 1 in college football is typically D-1AA cupcake week and there aren't too many BCS vs. BCS matchups week 1 and almost all of them get national TV coverage. I figured we would get either ESPN2 or ESPNU 12pm game just like we did 4 years ago with Minnesota and Marrone's first game on ESPN2. I will take the national TV slot as our game will probably be one of the 10 games Gameday will pick between for Corso's headgear pick.

good thought, but they will probably go to miami @ bc.

just kidding.

theyll either be in atlanta for clemson/auburn or jerruh-world for michigan/bama.

Its going to be in Dallas for Michigan-Alabama but our game will be one of the matchups they pick the winner of is what I meant. No chance Gameday comes to Syracuse but our program barely gets mentioned and having a BCS matchup week 1 will probably cause them to spend atleast a minute discussing our game.

then we have established that not only is Syracuse not a Pro town......its not a College town either.

why go to the ACC?? should just go to the patriot.

Oh Lord

I think that hoops vs football attendance demonstrates we are a fair weather college town.

We need to attract more fans that are available on Saturdays at noon.

You work in the psychology field, right? Tell me what you think of this.

People in Syracuse, with its cold winters, lengthy drives to bigger cities, etc., look for anything they can possibly find to bolster themselves with. That's why everyone has an invested interested in the basketball team. It's something to talk about, something to brag about, something to look forward to.

Then, there's the football team. I get laughed at by Syracuse University STUDENTS for caring heavily about the football team. People don't want to be thought of as a loser for caring. They don't want to be ridiculed or have their hearts broken. Because living in Syracuse isn't the easiest thing to do- Why make it harder for yourself?

It's the same reason people don't go to Chiefs games- They don't want to look stupid for caring.

Pretty much nailed it unfortunately.

Psychology - yes - one of my two jobs.

I don't think you're wrong at all. Syracuse can be a tough place to live in, though I must say the winters didn't bother me at all. I was only there for 4 years, though.

As for the students: the honest truth is that I follow the team more as an alum than I did as a student. Not that I didn't care or go to the games, it just wasn't a primary extracurricular focus as a student. As an alum, it's a great way to stay connected to a place that I love.

As for following a loser, I live relatively close to Rutgers and always man up and wear my Orange out whether we lose or not. I get nasty looks when we win, and giddy comments when we've lost. Gotta show we're an avid fan base, one man or woman at a time!

This^^^^^^^^^ I went to quite a few games when I was a student but certainly didn't care about SU FB like I do now.

As for following a loser, my heart has been shattered over the years from following the Pirates, Bills, Sabres that I can pretty much slough off any crap opposing fans/programs dish out.

I just get a kick out of people pounding their chests like they do on the football board. Whether you want to believe it or not, its a terrible weekend for a football game. Labor day weekend is probably the biggest holiday weekend of the summer and I for one have a prior commitment. Plus the game is at noon which pretty much blows the morning and afternoon. Not much I can do. I still bleed orange just like everyone else but I cant attend the game. Does that make me a shitty fan? I dont think so but if it does, then it. I still will watch. I still will support. I just cant attend the game. This game could be against Alabama and I still cant go. It is what it is. Get married, have kids and lets see how your schedules look as opposed to not.

Basketball is different. 2 hour games. Weather sucks and I live for getting out of the house to go. Sure I still have conflicts with hoops. Its just easier to attend hoops games whether you want to believe it or not. It has nothing to do with how good or bad we are in football. Sometimes people actually have conflicts as shocking as it may seem to some of you.

youre right.

whats interesting is that when the NFL moved off Labor Day in 1999, 1 of the reasons they cited was that attendence and TV ratings were lower that weekend, despite it being the opener...which was frustrating.

on the flip side to that, it gave college its own special weekend, 1 where the students were back in school and it was viewed as a win/win for football.

i guess cny didnt get the message, or maybe it is a pro town...

:rolling:

That's not my point at all. I can't go to the home opener either. But I too will be watching from afar- in a bar.

The point is this- more people would make the time if they felt they had anything to gain by it. The casual fan isn't interested in fielding questions like "You're going to the football game? Why?" and "Why go if they're just going to lose?" People want to feel validated and rewarded, not questioned and insecure.

I think SU better call the State Fair and work out a co-promotion deal like they did a few years back. Buy a ticket get a State Fair ticket.

Really wished this game was later...better chance to get more students.

I was not referring to your post. I just replied under your post.

I think its great to give them the weekend. I'm pissed I cant go to the game. I just wish it was at night so I could have gone. Oh well. Hopefully the person who is getting my tickets enjoys themselves.

First game of the year. At least it will be filled with the new freshmen. They usually do a great job at getting the new students there for the home opener. That'll help with student attendance.

I am curious for those non local guys will the Noon start effect any NYC guys from coming up? Kaiser?

I'm contemplating coming up.
I'll be at the USC game the following weekend.
