Northwestern wants a new football stadium

They averaged 37k in the last full season before Covid. Much less recently.

Oh i get the move. Just interesting nonetheless. The idea that 12k seats be removed means less ticket sales, less concession, in-stadium buys, etc.

Shows a lot for an AD to take away that many. I know. It’s Northwestern, not Ohio State, but still. Speaks volumes

All of those seats end up going to the visiting team. They will have a chance at a home field advantage now instead of having half the crowd there for the other team.

I’m at this stadium twice a year as we do the temporary lighting and build press box lighting structure on the press box roof every year.

Nostalgic stadium, but it’s old and I mean old. The historical pictures inside the box shows that it hasn’t changed all that much over the years. The Big ten years ago granted all schools money to install permanent lighting but Ryan field is a historical landmark so they can only do so many changes to the stadium.

The rest of the sports facilities are pretty dang awesome. I was told 2 years ago from assistant AD they would have a new stadium within 5 years. They certainly have the money.

But unless they play a nobody, they visiting fans outnumber the home fans most every game I’ve been to.

I can’t post the pics of the new LED press box system we put up this year. Apparently it’s not patented yet. ‍

All the Chicago alums of the other B1G schools must have wanted to visit something more modern.

They probably want them to move it down near Wrigley too.

The old stadium looks much nicer than Rutgers' stadium. The proposed stadium, though smaller, looks infinitely better than Rutgers. One school uses money wisely, one school plays the fool.

The renderings look real good. Being in Chicago, you'd think they would want a roof, but I am biased. Anyway, I hope they end up with something as nice as the drawings. Hosting Rutgers will make the Scarlet Knights cry as they walk in...

This is the new reality all schools face. UNC gave up 13K seats when they went to chairbacks. It was an acknowledgement that they would rarely get a 63K full house again. Last year for ND, we only had 48.5K in Scott (61.5K capacity). The number of reasons not to go to a game seems to grow each year.

We're about to be 5-0 for the first time in 35 years.

We have a (currently) ranked NC State team coming here in two weeks.

We have ND coming here two weeks after that.

Still PLENTY of tickets available for both games.

No school, unless your an SECult member or one of 4 Big10 schools, should have as large a stadium as they have now. Schools like syracuse and other peers would be better served by lowering the total seats and making the experience better

I still think there is a Covid hold back. In 2019 there were 34 of 65 P5 programs at 90% capacity, and 24 at 95%. Even SU had a really good year that season. So is 2022 the sign of a new trend or still an outlier?

I honestly think that a state of the art, 40k stadium with all the bells and whistles is the wave of the future. If we could rebuild The Dome with 40k seats and all upgrades I would vote for that in a heartbeat. A sold out 40k Dome every game would be delicious.

We’re gonna need you to change your handle to Jcuse _40 if you keep that nonsense up. ;)

Ha! 44k used to be my talking point mainly for that reason. Reality though tells me that 40k is more realistic.

What a beautiful rendering! If it comes to actual fruition, what an amazing investment for small private school. I recall that initial rendering of the Dome from the Walter's Group (May of '16), that was spectacular looking, and IMO, night and day aesthetically better looking than what SU ended up doing. As mentioned, simply my opinion from a pure aesthetic standpoint.

With that gorgeous football complex Northwestern built just a few years ago (near the lake's edge), they would've made a monumental commitment to football in a state of the art magnitude. Couple that with a school that ranks academically in the Top 10, quite the statement and extremely impressive to say the least.

I think the issue might be that 40K for football would make the basketball configuration a bit too small. We probably still need to have the ability to squeeze 30K in for hoops. Granted it may only happen once a season, but it's kind of our thing.
