A lot of lousy teams get into bowls each year. It used to mean something. But in the 20th Century, it's all about mediocrity.

I agree, but it's more like 21st century mediocrity. The 1993 and 1994 SU teams that finished 6-4-1 and 7-4 respectively didn't go bowling. There were "only" 19 bowls those years, now there are 35. The number of FBS teams did not increase at the same 84.2% rate that the bowl games did in the years between 1994 and 2012.
