Norton vs Murphy

To quote Iverson, "We talkin' 'bout practice!"

I don't care who looks like an All-American in practice. If you can't do it on game day then your arse should be on the bench.
Sorry, but I don't think you can evaluate a kicker's consistency based on one kick, game or practice. I agree that competition for the starting FG job should be opened back up, but I don't think you jut hand it to Murphy based on that 1 kick.

Since when is Norton's performance based on one kick? He's been awful every time they trot him out there. I know you're talking about Murphy, but you also have to talk about Norton and his complete inability to make a kick.

And all I know is that Norton makes that 49 yarder exactly 0 times out of 10, I'm guessing.

I give the staff credit for using Murphy on long FG attempts, and agree he should continue to be used in that role. But I want a FG kicker who can consistently hit inside the 40, and make a clutch kick with the game on the line. I don't believe that Norton is that guy, but I don't know if Murphy is. If he doesn't demonstrate consistency in practice, I seriously doubt he's going to perform any better in game situations.
It's regrettable that our only options are Norton and a walk-on.

But here's my point - we have plenty of evidence that Norton isn't the guy. He's pretty clearly proven he's just not good enough. So why not give Murphy a chance? The worst thing that could happen is he'll miss the same 25 yarder that Norton is going to miss. There's literally nothing to lose at this point by making this switch.

Norton barely made the FG at 3-0. The ball does not come off his foot well. Murphy kicks a nice end over end ball. Enough with the loyalty due to seniority, Shaf.

I think we'll see Murphy kicking FG's this Sat. You don't miss a 25 yd. chip shot and keep your job.

agree to go with Murphy since Norton is not the answer

What happened to the kicker we had that was from the UK or whatever?

"You just hold the ball, Dixon, and I'll kick the bloody piss out of it."

We all saw in the Clemson-FSU game what a difference a good kicker can make

All of this just makes me realize that Sterling Hofrichter may wind up being our most important recruit in this year's class.

Murphy will be kicking on Saturday. Norton sucks he missed 2 against CMU. Obviously those misses didn't hurt us but he has missed 3 in the last 2 weeks and has been lousy on and off the field since last year

I wouldn't be sad if Norton was put on the "hurry up and get your degree so you can play FCS" track. Nothing on or off the field has convinced me that he needs to remain part of the program.

You're thinking of Alex Hodgkinson. Turns out he's quite the little entrepreneur also. Kinda gives you flashbacks to the Mikhail Marinovich and his failed hookah bar, does it not?

That would explain all the football players lined up at that cart on Friday afternoon.

I'm guessing the city's going to shut that operation down pretty quickly. Maybe he'll have more time to win the starting role.

I'm surprised the NCAA isn't shutting him down because he's using his status as an athlete to make $. That's what happened with the hookah bar...as if the NCAA doesn't have other things to worry about.

Yeah, of all the ways they can throw around their weight to make society better, that'd be an odd one. (Which means it's a real possibility.)
