"Not a lot of people can do what we do" Re: Briles' offense.

We absolutely got the right guy for this job.

Finally.

Finally would imply there haven't "right guys" in the job in the past.

That obviously isn't true.

Finally would imply there haven't "right guys" in the job in the past.

That obviously isn't true.

What it actually implies is that we finally decided to hire a candidate with a proven track record of success as a collegiate head coach, instead of gambling on someone who needs on-the-job training and may or may not be qualified for the job.

What it actually implies is that we finally targeted a coach with an innovative offensive system that will take our program out of the stone ages, and finally take advantage of the domed environment that affords perfect conditions for 6 or 7 of our games every season--because we've missed the boat for far too long engaging in rock fights.

What it actually implies is that we finally conducted a national search for a replacement coach, with all candidates comprehensively vetted instead of the less thorough and far less effective approach we saw taken with two of the last three hires. And in so doing, we actually landed the best candidate that was the right fit for our program.

What it actually implies is that we finally have competent leadership atop the athletic department, which is why the three aforementioned things happened, and happened swiftly.

In the 16 seasons post-McNabb, we've had 3 seasons of mediocre "success" [maybe 4, depending on how low you set the bar]. Kudos to the AD for trying something different and getting with the times in terms of modern collegiate offense.

Finally

Dino and his fancy new offense is great and all but I'll miss the, single cadence all season offensive strategy. I think if given just a wee bit more time it really could've taken off

Well then you're in for a treat. Didn't I read somewhere that Babers used the single cadence while at BG? It's a staple of the offensive scheme.
Former players, coaches discuss why Syracuse should have faith in Dino Babers | syracuse.com

It's actually quite similar to Mc--faces offense. However I have a bit more faith in it working coming from a guy who has proven he knows how to make it work.

I guess we can book it then.

...getting back on topic here I was reading the BG messageboard about their new coach, etc in my downtime and caught this little blurb about Dino and his offense. Hitting the nail directly on the head as far as what a lot of our posters have been wanting. It's not necessarily about the passing %, screens vs downfield passes, speed of offense, going for it on 4th down but the combination of those plus many more that we're getting that makes Dino and his offense spectacular.

"Either way I see this as an excellent hire (Jinks). Seems like a highly respected young coach that has roots in a high scoring offensive system. I hope that he keeps the "Falcon Fast" stuff, because to me THAT Is what made Babers' offense special, and it's the best way to play football. I hope he has Dino's guts and confidence in the system as well. Punting on 4th & short is almost always stupid, and I love that we have had a HC that realized that...I hope Jinks does as well. Dino was ahead of the curve with football concepts, and I hope Jinks is as well. The offense should be fun, but Dino was more than just a flashy system...he backed it up with how he called every other aspect of the game."

OK guys - when you get to the line I'm just gonna say hike and then the play will start.

Am I the only one who read this post and thought "The Goodbye Girl"? Your writing has a very high-strung 1970s melodrama feel to it. If there was still a big audience for Neil Simon, you'd make a fortune.

Briles first 3 winning seasons were 2010, 2011, 2012, with 7-6, 10-3, 8-5 records. So by using the logic that:

The 2010 team was made up using recruits from 2007-2010 recruiting classes, those classes were ranked 52nd, 56th, 44th, 51st.
The 2011 team was made of classes ranking 56th, 44th, 51st, 52nd
The 2012 team was made of classes ranking 44th, 51st, 52nd, 30th

If you put any stock into recruiting service rankings, you have to admit, that those 3 teams had talent that ranked right around where our talent ranks.
I don't think you can compete for titles with those classes, but using Briles system can make you relevant, ranked, and where we would all love to be right now.

Now Baylor has strung together back to back 11 win seasons, and possibly another 10 win this year using back up QB's. Now they're building momentum that started with those first 3 successful seasons. Now the recruiting is up another notch, and they're compiling serious talent with classes that ranked 26th in 2013, 23rd in 2014, and 44th for 2015 with a 5 star player.

This is the trajectory I hope to see with us. Slow, steady, maintainable growth. We already have talent that ranks in the 40-50's. We can have 7, 8, and 9 win seasons with the talent we get combined with the right coaches.

I'd love to see us get in that 25-35 range, and see what Dino can do with that.

By the way, Briles first 2 years were back to back 4-8 campaigns. I pray that our fanbase would be patient enough with Dino to sit through 2 years like that.

I'll be interested to see how Babers works with Coyle on the out-of-conference scheduling. Briles is notorious for scheduling ultra-cupcakes, even now that Baylor is established, and I think Babers would follow that blueprint. Boise St I recall always had an "anywhere, anytime" kind of schedule. Does Coyle bring that mentality to SU, and if so, where do the two meet? I'd prefer cupcakes since moral victories don't count in the record book nor on the recruiting trail. And I know we have a thousand threads about scheduling. ;)

I agree on the scheduling. I'm sure it's an unpopular opinion, but haven't we gotten to that point? We are so irrelevant in CFB right now, yet some people scoff at the idea of padding the schedule a bit as a means to an end. I hear a lot of, "the hottest fires make the strongest steel" talk, but my answer to that is, "How has that philosophy helped us in any way so far?" There are, 9, I believe, teams in CFB that haven't had a 9 win season since Syracuse's last 9 win season. Yes we are one of them. Yet, somehow a lot of people feel it's beneath us to schedule down just to build some momentum. I don't think Dukes football fans will complain about 10-4, 9-4, and possibly 8-5 this year. It's a means to an end, and can build momentum. Winning is contagious. Losing by 10-30 points to powerhouses is not contagious. I'm sure many will disagree, but that's my opinion.
