Yes he is turning the ball over at a very high rate, but it’s important to realize that much like in football, if the receiver doesn’t create much separation, every pass becomes much harder.

There were a couple last night where he literally had no where to go with the ball. Lack of Team athleticism hurts all aspects of the game.

It’s a combination of him not being sble to keep his dribble alive well enough to create good passing lanes, and teammates unable to shake their defender.

That dynamic drastically changed when Sy was in. His defender fouled twice, then had to allow separation, which improved Sy’s passing lanes. Now Sy has to take advantage of that better going forward.

Very interesting watching what happens at PG for us.

The one thing I’d like to see is to have Sy come in for Jimmy for a couple possessions and go small. Might be able to generate some better looks offensively when we start to stagnate.

Encouraging that when Sy came in yesterday he looked like a PG and like he belonged on the court. I also agree about sitting Jimmy for him for a few minutes each half, Jimmy is a nice player but he goes into stretches where he gets lost on both sides of the court.

The most dangerous play I saw yesterday was not even a turnover, but when we were trying to dribble clock out and he went baseline and was somehow able to get the pass to (Jimmy?) in the corner through some traffic. That had turnover into transition written all over. When he first took off that way I immediately thought of Georgetown against us in 2006 that led to the game winning steal and layup... Nichols to Gmac to Devo.

Joe needs to stop lazy passes. JB needs to scheme against pressure as Joe will always struggle against athletic guards. In a perfect world we should be able to beat pressure more via the pass vs the dribble.

I remember that play - pretty sure it was Swider in the corner. Can’t believe it wasn’t a turnover

Fair take.

the main thing I’d like Joe to stop is getting into the lane just to get into the lane. its not creating looks because no one is helping to him and he can’t finish inside. would much rather have him just pull him and shoot a mid range

JB did scheme against pressure. At least in my eyes. Watch last night, there were many, many occasions that Swider ran slowly up the court, about 10 feet ahead of Girard. He was essentially his blocking back/fullback. It happened too often for it to be happenstance. I think JimmyIII performed this function a few times, too.

We'd be really small with Torrance and Girard on the floor together but I can see the point and we're not very good defensively regardless, so ...

I like Girard offensively for the most part even with the annoying turnovers. He's playing with more confidence, which is huge and he's a pretty creative passer, which also leads to a few more turnovers, but generates offense more than a Triche-type (pretty careful with the ball, but not the most creative passer).

The thing I'd like to see him do a bit more of is changing speeds, changing directions. He doesn't have the greatest handle, period, but he also spends a lot of time in one spot dribbling or picks his dribble up with nowhere to go. Some of that is unavoidable, but some of it can be improved with more discipline.

What I do love is when moves well without the ball, catches it on the moves and is in position to attack. He can sometimes find himself an open mid-range jumper and he's pretty good at firing the ball back out to shooters when he's got the defense moving.

Torrance did a nice job I thought. The charge was a BS call, IMO, and he had the other bucket as well and drew those two fouls. He also is soooo much more active on defense. I have to think he'll get more opportunities as the year goes on.

Jimmy definitely did it. And frequently put his arms up as if to say, "I'm not doing this on purpose. And no, it's not a moving pick as I continue down the court intentionally placing myself in the path of Joe's defender."

Moving well without the ball is because his natural position is the 2

That is exactly what they did and I wonder at what point that becomes a moving screen. Does anyone know the rule on that?

The defender could probably get the call if he absorbed some contact or fell. It was a moving screen the whole time, but it doesn't get called until someone gains an advantage.

It’s pretty standard in the NBA.

ya basically the defender would need to force the issue and take a hit or flop

The rule is pretty clear, ... if we do it, it's all good and natural. "Part of the game!"
If FSU or Nova or Georgetown or anyone else in the ACC dares try that maneuver, it is an obvious moving pick and grounds for a two-shot technical, immediate ejection and jail time.

Agreed, but it’s the annoying unforced turnovers that look to be almost careless that have to stop. Happened against Auburn and again last night and got him pulled both times.

The intangible Joe brings to the court is his fire. He is the only player in the rotation who exhibits the passion and willingness to step on the throat of his opponent and implores his teammates and the crowd to join in. Almost seems we are “too nice” without that.

thats not really what a moving screen is.. if you are moving and i am moving i dont get free access to where you are going.. now if i am not moving and you are and then i jump in front of you thats an issue. except in the case of rebounding where rules dont seem to apply.

Pitt used this tactic consistently back in the day.

Lazy passes and picking up his dribble at odd times are the biggest part of his weakness. Sometimes he just tries to do too much.

Heh. I was at the game, and had some Indiana fans near me, and one said something very much like that.

Come to think of it, there were a lot of Indiana fans there last night. I didn't see any chair-throwing contests during commercial breaks.

What you call lazy, JB called bad decisions in his presser.

Was half naked girl there
