Was the zone at times against VT? Frank up awfully high, particularly in the first half. As a result, the wing who usually pops up to cover the wing 3, would sprint down to help down low in case they went there, resulting in a wide open 3 on the wing. It looked comical.

the wings were collapsing WAYY too hard

made no sense and gave up WIDE open threes

there was an adjustment made and that stopped

but jimmy and cole collapsing into the paint basically went against what JB said was the plan from the start

seems to be a bit of miscommunication on that side in many games where the gameplan isnt executed accurately to start the game

seems that should be a benefit of dad-son ball not a weakness

VT (5-20) and Virginia (0-8) can’t hit the ocean right now from 3, but of course against us they look like NBA players.

well shooting doesnt happen in a vaccuum

if the player is otherwise unpressured and not under duress...they are gonna hit mor threes

players know they can get what they want against the zone so tehy relax and stroke away

VT shot far below their average 3pg% against us. UVa shot about their average.

I fully believe even with the best athletes in the world that the zone is playing with one hand tied behind your back in todays game. Situationally it might offer an advantage but the days of 40 minutes of zone are looking more and more ridiculous. fab Melo and dion waiters would drastically improve this defense but more teams are better equipped to carve it up than at anytime in history.

Huh? VT shot like 28 percent against us. It was the high low action that killed us with Muttsy

its about coach control. the coach can decide how the game is played. thats the appeal for JB.

(assuming the players can execute it as designed)

but im with you...all these players now grew up idolizing steph curry and the days of forcing opponnents into wide open 3s is madness

*the only thing I would say is with the absolute perfect roster i would still be cool with the 2-3

the zone has improved over the season

the first 10 minutes of the zone vs VT were an abomination

no defender was within 10 feet of any shooter

which apparently was not what JB wanted

but those two games are cherry picking at its finest

what about the other 20 games where the zone was torched by opponents shooting above their avg?

the team is like last place in p5 in 3point % allowed...isnt that relevant?

Cherry picking? Those were the two teams mentioned that you responded too.

Even then, given the freak athletes required for an absolute perfect roster - it would be ignorant to not at least be capable of man-to-man in that scenario. dion waiters and company would’ve been absolutely lethal if they were coached up in m2m.

I think a smart coach accepting the realities of the modern game would want their athletes to be “good enough” to switch to zone as a change up for specific matchups. But the bread and butter should be some flavor of m2m.

to that point…I was more referring to UVA. But yes, you are right.

after 45 years at the helm of a major and successful college basketball team I think it would be hard not develop a "healthy ego" and perhaps a bit of hubris

i think a big part of sticking with the zone - as JB employs it - is it gives the coach the chance to be the string pulling puppetmaster of the defense

He can decide how other teams must attack his team...and thats very alluring

He can flex his mental mastermindedness

this season, with the extreme lack of athleticism his roster has...not so much

I agree that its not really all that great nowadays...its just too predictable and too vulnerable...i think when its done right though...its just about as good as it gets ...that frank howard tyus battle team was pretty stingy with the zone ...they were winning rock fights on the reg with it.

And JB has a point in that ...teams like VT do socre pretty well and shoot well from 3 vs Man to man

I jus think the real problem is being too formulaic and rigid

we can see how the 1-3-1 wrinkle throws teams off...gotta be unpredictable, imo

That only happened the first few minutes of the game. JB addressed this in his presser.
