Notable college independents in the 90’s

Interesting responses here..

Strictly on the field/court, it has been a net negative for everyone listed there outside of FSU, Miami (at least during the BE years), and perhaps Pitt, as they were pretty bad in the early 90s. You could likely say that Cincinnati has risen above since then, too.

None of this ^^^ is financial, where every school has done well/better, none more so than Ped State and South Carolina. The one exception is likely Tulane.

What is the metric for success? Notre Dame has been in the national championship. Miami and Florida State have won national championships.

Kind of random to pick that year. Ironically most of those schools had a bad year in 1990.

Pitt 3-7-1
South Carolina 6-5
Tulane 4-7
BC 4-7
SU 7-4-2
FSU 10-2
Cincy 1-10
Penn State 9-3
WV 4-7
Notre Dame 9-3
Louisville 10-1-1
Miami 10-2

Best record not mentioned, LA Tech 8-3-1. P5s not mentioned VA Tech 6-5 and Rutgers 3-8.

Besides Miami and SU, you can make an argument that the rest of the programs are par or better.

Almost unequivocally yes for everyone listed.

There actually was a proposal, by Jefferson-Pilot, to create a superconference from the east coast and southern independents in 1990/91. Would've been all those schools, excluding ND and PSU, along with East Carolina, Southern Miss and a few others.

Nobody except for ND has the financial ability to be independent today. It isn’t 1990 anymore.

I have a really based time imagining schools like Miami, FSU or Penn State agreeing to be in the same conference as schools like East Carolina or Southern Miss.
