No. 4 Syracuse (6-1, 2-0 ACC) at No. 1 Notre Dame (5-1, 1-0 ACC) When: Saturday, noon (ESPNU) Last time: April 2, 2016, Notre Dame won 17-7 April 2, 2016 — In addition to the almost 9,000 fans in attendance, around 200 Syracuse lacrosse alums filled the Carrier Dome to celebrate the program’s 100th anniversary and watch a fun little scrap between the Orange and the Fighting Irish. Oh but it was not a fun little scrap at all. The Irish scored first and in bunches throughout, maintained a comfortable lead for most of the game and officially closed out the celebration on a five-goal run. Basically here’s how it went: Imagine you had a birthday party and someone else walked up and blew out all your candles. OK, now instead of that, imagine they took the candles from your cake and burned your house down — something more in that neighborhood, disrespect-wise. While winning this Saturday’s game won’t provide an appropriate measure of payback for ruining such a special occasion, it could more reasonably serve to avenge their 2015 meeting, where the No. 2 Irish knocked off the No. 1 Orange 13-12 in double-overtime. In more recent events, Syracuse beat Duke 12-11 in overtime last weekend, the sixth straight one-goal game for the Orange, and the fifth win of the six. ACC Co-offensive Player of the Week Nick Mariano (15, 11) led the offense with three goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Jamie Trimboli (3, 2) buried the game-winner in his first game as a starter. Meanwhile in South Bend, the Fighting Irish were busy handing Ohio State its first loss of the season by way of a 12-7 takedown. Thanks in part to the efforts of ACC Defensive Player of the Week John Sexton (who scored a goal and an assist as well), the Notre Dame defense held the Buckeyes to just two goals in the second half. But enough about last weekend, let’s get to the game’s main event, the highly-anticipated second installment of the Battle of the Sergios: Two Sergios enter, one Sergio leaves (Well, to be fair, they’re actually both going to leave when the game’s over). The Battle’s first installment never quite materialized as hoped (Perkovic scored one goal in last year’s meeting, Salcido one assist), but the pair’s recent production gives cause for optimism this time around. The other ACC Co-offensive Player of the Week, Sergio Perkovic (10, 2) led the Fighting Irish with three goals and an assist against Ohio State, his second hat trick in as many games. In the other corner, Sergio Salcido (9, 16) tied Mariano for the team-high in points last weekend, scoring two goals and two assists against Duke.
