Notre Dame Week News

Tough one for the Orange tomorrow in the Dome. Despite some early season struggles, it seems as though the Irish are finding their groove with blowout wins over Michigan and Duke. As well all know, the recent history vs ND is not good, seven straight losses and most of them blowouts. How can the Orange turn the tide?

I think first things first, the Orange have to do better at the face-off X. Last year the Irish won 20-29 face-offs and John Mullen went 3-8. Mullen is coming off perhaps his worst performance of the year vs Virginia, which doesn't inspire a ton of confidence. I don't know what the answer is here, just need to play better.

ND's turnaround has been connected to moving Devon McLane from midfield to attack. My biggest concern however is still the midfield - ND has some freakish athletes in Matt Jefferey and Jordan Faison. I imagine Faison will draw the pole, but I worry about SU's shorties matching feet with the likes of Jeffery and Will Angrick. With ND's finishers on attack, Syracuse will need to limit the amount of times they are sliding to the midfield.

You would think that the Orange would get a reprieve after facing Liam Entemann in goal for four years, however the Irish seem to have reloaded with Thomas Riccarldeli, whose saving the ball at nearly 60%. He hasn't given up more than 11 goals in a game this year (a one goal loss to Maryland). Hopefully Syracuse can break through against this defense.

Despite everything these last seven years, I have gotten the impression that SU can score on ND, it's just a matter of having the ball. Even though the Irish have faced good teams this year (Maryland, OSU, Georgetown, Michigan), I do think that SU is the best offense they will have faced. But SU will have to stay focused this game, and continue to protect the ball. Also with so much hype surrounding this game, I do worry that SU will come out over aggressive and rack up a bunch of penalties. Have to avoid that here.

I don't have a magic answer for this game. Obviously the implications are huge as a win would almost guarantee a spot in the ACC tourney and make the NCAA's that much more likely (plus chance at a seed). But SU will have to play their best game of the season to make it happen. What better time than now?

Carc’s knowledgeable but the hyperbole gets worse and worse every year. Every game Carc does you learn that the winning team’s 4th string LSM has potential to be the best player in history at that position.
I don't mind the enthusiasm or even the hype, but I don't need to hear Paul, Quint and the other guy with glasses talk about how much they were bench pressing that morning.

Sure, keep it fun, but jeez, you're professionals calling some of the best college lacrosse games in the country. Please censor yourself, at least a little bit. It's not a locker room, it's a live broadcast.

On another note, I remember listening to Ryan Powell call a few games a few years back and had NO IDEA who it was, but did hear a very strong CNY/upper CNY accent. I was amazed when I found out it was him. I liked his call, I just really would have never guessed that was him. I think I've heard Mike and Casey talk before, but maybe never heard Ryan.

Upper-class seating will be open tomorrow and additional concessions. SU expecting 10K+
Do not underestimate the pull of ND sports on ND fans/alum. I took my son to the ND at Duke game two years ago and it was sold out. Aside from when they play UNC, the visitors side, where I prefer to sit, is sparse for almost every Duke lacrosse game.

If you go to the Air Force game, there will be ten people on the visitors side. But if they're playing ND, it'll be sold out. (I grew up watching games in The Dome but now live down the block from Duke's stadium.) And actually, it'll also be pretty crowded for 'Cuse games, since this area has a fair number of former upstate NYers at this point.

I know ND fans travel pretty well but my recollection is that they don't normally travel great to the Dome for lax games (for obvious reasons). Certainly a better showing then a lot of teams but don't think they are moving the needle here. The uptick in attendance is really about the matchup (2x defending champ etc) and a great start time. SU being on a 5 game winning streak also helps the "casual fan" make the trip up. This started last year with the Maryland and UVA games SU was able to attract I believe 8500+ for both. The weekend games vs big opponents have really helped boost attendance, assuming SU doesn't fall apart the next few games UNC should have a really big crowd as well.

Would be shocked if we see Deere out there at attack over Anderson. Honestly would be a little surprised if we saw Thomson out there over Anderson right away too. His two goals were in unsettled situations, but even in 6v6 he was drawing a ton of attention, could have easily had a couple assists if guys finished, and drew a penalty at a key moment in the game. They might ease Thomson in with some time on the second middie line. We have been missing his abilities in two man game situations. Feel for Deere, but he will have both Thomson and Anderson ahead of him on the list of attack options at this point. Against a slow to slide team like ND, Anderson seems like the obvious choice.

Not the thread for it but I’m already envisioning a potential Spallina-Bear-Deere attack paired with a Thomson-Rhoa-Leo midfield next year for our run at a 2nd straight title. :)

Thomson is a talented player who was having a great year prior to his injury & I don’t doubt that he earned the spot preseason, but I still think that moving him to attack was, at least in part, done to get Rhoa onto 1st line mid.

In your experience, would a large lax crowd mean definitely no shot at Raynor/Standart lots 30 minutes before face?

I’m asking because it’ll be a miracle if my crew can get there earlier than 1:30. We’ve got a Raynor pass but don’t want to miss the opening face if we’ve gotta park at Lally (i.e. stadium West is full).

We’re debating on going straight to Lally and rolling the dice on shuttle traffic rather than getting denied at stadium west lots.

Not gonna hold you to your prediction, just curious your (or any other diehard’s) opinion.

I do not even think Lally is an option for Lax and I dont think they run shuttles. I could be wrong

All of the West Lots will be open... Henry Street, Hill, Raynor and Standart. $20 a piece for parking.

SU has opened Lally for the game and will be running shuttles. West lots get filled up for bigger games so this is a good call for SU.

They’re opening Lally for tomorrow’s game due to anticipated large crowd size

IF you have a Raynor pass you should still be good, once it gets to full they turn away and cash cars and will only take passes. Same for the parking garage across the street which is where they will send Raynor pass holders if Raynor is filled which it will probably be by 130.
I would still recommend coming down to the west lots because you already have a pass, they have to park you somewhere in that area.

Thanks, Jeremy!
