Now that GMac is HC, what does next year's squad look like?

What do you think Siena’s record would have been in the ACC this season?

Many teams can play over their heads and compete for a day. That’s why we have 15 seeds that upset 2 seeds.

How many could do it over the course of an 18 game conference schedule? That’s when you need the horses to win consistently.

To be fair I’d take what he’s getting at as a compromise which I think is a fair point. There is both talent and expected improvement in talent on this roster but also the right mindset and fits. For year 1 and winning a lot that’s a good approach. A couple more pieces to the puzzle to finish this roster out still of course. Make the tournament without the bubble drama and see what happens then we make the push to keep the best talent and have a better argument for the bigger fish next year either HS or portal or more euro.

Can't remember the name but I hope that guy for Siena that missed the consecutive dunks is not coming to SU. We already know he can't hang vs ACC competition.

I think the roster was always going to be somewhat underwhelming year one, despite all the big talk about NIL $$$ to throw around. I think once all the stupid money (Louisville, Michigan, etc.) gets used up, there will hopefully be some star-caliber players still available that we can snatch up.

it’s underwhelming in name recognition more than actual talent is how i see it. I get it’s not stacked like 5-10 other programs have loaded up spending like crazy but beyond that there’s a lot to like.

Should be 4 spots left if my math is right - assuming they carry 15 again with Russell (injured) and Lobdell (walk-on) remaining on the team.

- Starting C (Freeman?)
- PG (probably a backup, ideally a good 3 point shooter)
- Backup PF (Folefac?)
- Another shooter (maybe a wing? Guard? Big? Idk). Probably a depth piece at this point I would think.
I wouldn't hand the PF job to White, especially if we can get a guy like Folefac. Let him compete.

The only lockdown starter I see for certain is Tobiason. The rest of the roster seems will be a competition for who gets to start. Sadiq the inside track obviously at the 4 but again outside of AT it’s a competition. Depends on who else we sign if that changes or the next additions are sure fire starters.

I agree more or less, but when the hire was being framed with also being flush with NIL money, it can definitely leave a bit to be desired. There are still moves to be made for sure, and final judgement should be reserved until everything shakes out, but I don’t currently see how this incoming group is all that different from last year’s.

Feels like we’re going to play similar to Houston. Defense first with guys who can switch defensively, and try and score in the 60s. Really interested in seeing how it works.
yeah. GMAC has a very mid-major philosophy on offense, style of play, and roster construction. Maybe the roster construction comes from the fact that he knows top players don't want to play hold the ball and try to win 51-49. it's just hard to imagine we had NIL+ rev share of $12-13 million and this is what we ended up with.

You guys are funny. We should want elite talent. The “hard working” stuff only gets a team so far.
While I get the sentiment of your comment we all know that a lot of the “elite” talent in the portal is not going to pan out.

I think people are having trouble with headlines. I could care less what Kentucky and Uconn are doing right now but I do care about the ACC. Personally I expect to be top 6 in the ACC this year which means a no sweat Selection Sunday and decent NCAAT seed.

Just for reference the below 10 teams have lost a net of 63 players ...Most of these teams also don't have top tier talent coming in either or have only grabbed 1 guy from the portal or none. Maybe you could argue some of these squads have returning talent but really not many of them.

ND -6 net players portaled out (On3)
GT-7
UNC-7
NCSt-7
VTech-6
BC -9
Wake-7
SMU-5
FSU-5
Stanford-4

Meanwhile Cuse is 4 out the door and 4 in right now on the portal + 2 Euros + 1 Frosh +2 Returnees. We are prob 3-4 guys away from a complete roster all with a new coach and new staff and it's only April 15.

Right now there are like 5 other new ACC coaches and a bunch of other coaches not sure what they're doing. Yet people are after Gmac because we haven't brought on enough "elite" 5 star guys that have name recognition.

I say patience my young Padawans

This is a massive assumption and wrong. This roster is not constructed like a mid major. It’s constructed to build an entire team not just a couple names. You have to win before you are going to be contending for titles. People get hung up on a couple players meaning everything. You need a foundation to start with that builds an identity and then you stack on top of the that momentum. This philosophy of how the roster is being built is consistent with how plenty of other successful programs are run. Clemson and UVA very much use a similar approach and it works very well.

I don’t expect us to avoid big splashes every year in fact this may be the only year needed to build this way. It’s just not flashy. Too many are comparing our off season to top 10 programs instead and by not hitting the portal in the same manner the immediately claiming we are destined for failure. In reality we are right in the pack with the rest of the top 30-40 programs with how we are attacking this off season. The X factor will be in talent evaluation, coaching and development.

I'm still hopeful they have a big splash in the works.

There’s a reason I spoke broadly and not about Gerry’s roster construction in progress. You don’t need to preach patience to me.

Again, my sole point is that all the blue collar, work ethic, plays the game the right way stuff that a certain segment of fans gets verrrrrry excited about doesn’t win titles without great talent.

You know who knew that? Jim Boeheim.

The front court is very weak. Our centers are huge unknowns.

I like White but he needs to make a huge leap or else we are screwed at the 4.

PG needs another scorer/playmaker.

This team needs to win and get to the tournament. I maybe in the minority on this, but the goal every year is to make the final 4. Especially in the portal era. No time for improvements/development. As we have seen teams are about 80% turnover year to year.

Good lord. That sounds a whole lot like the UVA teams under Bennett which the posters on here detested. This will be fun.

I really hope we have higher standards than modeling ourselves after clemson.
