now that joe is fired, will they let him back on

Assuming NOTHING else comes out against Paterno (and it probably will - that he knew in 1998 for instance - i don't think that's been verified yet), I would guess he'll be around the program at some point assuming he doesn't die soon. Like SWC said, since he didn't molest the kids himself (not defending him - AT ALL) the loonies at Penn State that worship him and were defending him nonstop as doing "enough" will still love to see him around the program.

When they dude dies though, it's going to be huge. I think there is a pretty good chance he gets his glory back, but he won't be around to see it obviously (that's a good thing - he doesn't deserve it). (Again - assuming nothing else comes out).
If he dies in 6 months, I bet they still shut down that crazy state to celebrate his life.

I get that you're not defending him SUSVU, but for argument's sake I'd say that the BOT dismissal of Paterno refutes your prediction, and essentially means that he WON'T be allowed around the football program for the duration of this scandal. Forget fan sentiment--the University couldn't distance itself from him fast enough--and that's just going on what's been made public to date.

If any other damning information comes out, not only will Paterno not be permanently banished, he'll be universally vilified.

Penn State is going to experience significant pain as a function of this. They'll treat Paterno like a leper from here on out--just watch.

All you have to ask is 1 thing of these loonies who have their heads in the sand, including a few here.

Joe knew about 2002. How does he allow him at practice in 2007 with a young boy?

Although there is a 15 year of fail on Paterno's head, it only takes 1 to prove he didn't care if little boys were raped.

Unless there is a cover up by the AG and others ($$$ can buy a lot), there will eventually be charges brought against Paterno. He may have slid by on the 2002 thing because he called his "boss", but the cover up alone for 15+ years will be worth some charges. Then Paterno can spend his last living days in jail being ass raped by Bubba.

Completely agree--there is no salvaging this legacy. There will be no "well, time has passed and it's time to focus on what JoePa accomplished..." sentiment.

He was fired in disgrace--justifiably so. And as you point out, I'm guessing that we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg in terms of how massive this scandal will become.

Reminds me of Woody Hayes. He was a pretty good coach too. Before he punched a kid during a game. Now that's who he is.

Joe Paterno is now and forever the man who covered up while one of his assistants raped little boys.

Except for some diehard State Penners, Paterno's name is mud. This is now his legacy.

SWC, I'm actually quite surprised to hear you espouse this perspective. I categorically disagree with your premise.

What Paterno didn't do was reprehensible, particularly given how he continued to allow a predatory pedophile rapist to have access to campus facilities for years after this mess was initially brought to his attention, resulting in countless additional child sexual molestation victims. I don't think that anyone has sympathy for the "he did what was legally required" apologist perspective anymore, or buys that him being fired was sufficient "punishment"--especially as more damning information continues to surface.

Mark my words: if it comes to light that any of this was intentionally covered up--and my money is on that being exactly where this goes--than JoePa's disgraceful legacy will be a blight that PSU will willingly bury.

The fact that they painted Sandusky out of the mural but not Paterno is an indication that they are not going to erase him from their memory.

The fact that a 46 year institution was FIRED by the BOT due to his complicity in this scandal is an indication that that is about to change.

lol, I really should change my name back.

Yeah, it's a good point. The university probably will do everything possible to keep him away forever - I'd probably change my stance on that one.

However, I do still think a lot of people have the same take as JB. I think all indications are that if nothing changes (and it will, but for arguments sake) that you'll have enough people that just kind of chalk it up as a mostly great old coach that made a huge mistake or lapse in judgment without connecting the dots that his willful ignorance allowed more kids to be molested.

When he dies, I think it could still turn into a big event in PA for a lot of people where the man is fondly remembered. You still have that campus celebrating the guy and people calling for a whiteout...

My guess is that when Sandusky was busred in 98 he made a deal with the devil a.k.a Joe Pa. Agreed to step down and funnel a substantial amount of coin from Sturdy Wings into the football program. When McCreary caught him Joe Pa said not to worry he would take care of it.
Joe Pa goes to the AD with a much less descriptive version of what happened and points out the financial gain from Sandusky.
NCAA death penalty when all is said and done.
Joe Pa is dead within 6 months. Scott Paterno is on a reality show on E or Bravo in the next few years. Sandusky commits suicide or is shanked. Put him in a cell with Conrad Murray and tell him, "Doc this poor man needs help sleeping."

This. This is absolutely what should happen. Covering up what happened (and continued to happen) to those kids so Paterno could keep coaching and they could win some more football games??? Sorry, that is WAAAAAAY worse than anything SMU did. Burn the whole thing to the ground. Burn. It. To. The. Ground.

Success and tradition matter, and Rutgers has little to none of either. Joe's next gig will be on Dancing With The Stars.

As much as many would like to see that happen, he will never go to jail.

I think it shows how delusional penn state is by still going on to play this game. They should cancel it or actually postpone it for a later time in december. I don't think this is going to be a healing process and I hope this doesn't get ugly if nebraska jumps ahead and they get even more frustrated.

Let's just look at this for a second. When Sandusky 'retired' in 1999, following the 1998 incident, Penn State set him up with access to at-risk kids through his 'charity', the Second Mile Foundation. He had the run of the campus. Players were encouraged to participate with the charity. Even if they didn't officially 'know' that Sandusky was a pedophile, and I think they did, they sure as bleep knew after the 2002 incident, which was never acted upon. So, even if you were willing to give everyone a pass b/c they 'technically' fulfilled their legal obligation, which no one should, IMHO, how can you give the university, or anyone associated with it, a pass for allowing this Foundation to still operate on its campus? And to allow Sandusky to have free run of the place? And to feed Sandusky's need for access to child victims? And to enable Sandusky to bring 'at-risk' children with him to bowl games?

This is just sicksicksick. It's right there with the Catholic Church scandals in that a male-dominated hierarchy enabled the ongoing abuse of children. And, in Happy Valley, the Alpha Dog of that hierarchy was Joe Paterno.

I don't knwo why the fans would be mad at Nebraska. Tom Osborne seems to be concerned for his players.

I like the idea of using the game to raise funds for the victims. They should turn over all the gate receipts to them.

And that's all they are going to do. If they had an "I" to dot, they put him in there a year from now.

Apparently, any time there is a crime in Happy Valley, the correct thing to do is to call Joe Paterno. I'm sure he will still be busy.

SWC, you are a great poster, but if that's what you honestly believe, then I'd say that Bees post earlier in this thread about some posters having their heads buried in the sand applies to you.

I'd challenge you to read the grand jury indictment, and then let me know if you still have the same opinion.

This is going to go very, very badly for JoePa. Worse and worse new information is coming to light every day.

That's fine but it will kill the whole institution long term if they try to hold Paterno up as anything but child rapist appologist and enabler. They need to take down anything glorifying Paterno on that campus, because outside of that valley people believe him to be almost as bad as Sandusky.

I'm just looking at what Penn State is doing- and not doing.

You must either be unaware of the pertinent facts or you're choosing to willingly ignore them if that's your barometer.
