Now that the dust has settled

I wish people would not waste electrons with the old homilies of "too soon to judge", "its only one game" etc. Of course, we all know that, but all we can go on is what we see on the field. There are plenty of reasons, excuses and rationalizations to go around. The reality is that we did not coach or play very well. We had many negative surprises and very fee positive ones.

The football gods gave us one and it is now up to the team to take advantage of the gift.

The football Gods took the Pitt game last year from us by 1 point.

The football Gods (and the refs) took the Northwestern game from us 2 years ago.

The football Gods gave us the win against Toledo in 2011.

The football Gods took the Rutgers game from us in 2011 as well.

All of those seasons, we all were close to the ledge after those games and every season turned out pretty well with competitive teams. Our coaching staffs have been good at making adjustments after games.

In game...not so much.

I think we just beat ourselves in the Rutgirls game. Dropped pick six, Pugh slips on the blocked FG play. Ugh.

All are bad memories for me, I did not have a good feeling after the Toledo game. As it turned out, they were a lot tougher opponent than we gave them credit for. I believe that the same is true with Nova.

I'm not worrired about Michigan I am worried about Syracuse. We won, but that's the only positive that came out of last night. All that work you put in throughout the year is for a measly 12 games, you cannot afford to waste your opportunities.
Only thing
No turn overs
7 penalties 55 yards
Practiced against strong no huddle offense. Perfect wake up call with 13 days to improve. Got the W
NOTHING GOOD?

Maybe the game we needed to improve during our by week.

i completely agree with you while everyone is freaking out and thinking the world is coming to an end and are season will be a joke, i see the glass half full. what happend...happend you cannot change the past and no matter how much people bitch and moan its not going to change the outcome. i would much rather have this all happen in our season opener then say the middle of the season when were SUPPOSED to have everything figured out. This happens against a d 1 school and people will say o we had some mishaps they played a good game . It happens against someone like nova and its a big wakeup call for some completely different thinking of how where ganna go about this season. i only see more good then bad from all of this id much rather see all the mishaps happen in the first game so we can address them now! we have the talent, shafers pissed, the teams pissed, t hunt learned his lesson (luckily not in conference play) i see this as a big lesson and a huge motivation and focus on DISCIPLINE. for gods sakes were cuse fans were so used to the heart wrenching close games that we should win then were all down and sad and depressed ... then we go kick a team like louisville or wv's god damn ass ! we are and always will be the under dogs and honestly id rather have it no other way

There really isn't anything good that came out of last night.
40k to see a 1-AA team is good. Millions of bytes have been slaughtered on this site over the years complaining about local fan support. People say they only turn out to see good teams or, maybe, old rivals. Last night was neither and people came out to support the football team big. Not in NYC. In CNY. On the start of Labor Day weekend.

This seems to settle one of the longest running debates on the board. People will indeed support the football program if its halfway decent. I'm a realist. Last night was bad on the field definitely but the fans came out. That was nice to see. I still think Shafer will get this squared away too.

Coaching staff was exposed last night. Without Lester, McDonald is in over his head. Bullough hasn't done anything as the d coordinator either. Been out schemed constantly, no adjustments, and continuous miscommunication in the secondary that I can only contribute to confusion from the booth. I mean in the first half Villanova used a TO due to play clock issues and coming out of the timeout we had to use a TO before a snap ever occurred. That should never happen.

Certainly looked like Nova had things pretty much figured out.

Now that the dust has settled I have to laugh that so many people predicted a close game yet all these same people are hand wringing, moaning and groaning today. Did these same people think we would've played flawless AND been in a tight game against a D1AA team?

Without Lester? Did he quit or something that I am not aware of?

Seriously? Let me refresh your memory...
Nova was driving and had the ball on our 15, 2nd down & 7, with SU clinging to a 7-0 lead. Nova had to call a TO. When play resumed, Bullough obviously didn't like the defensive scheme or personnel based on what the Wildcats showed us, and called a TO to make the necessary adjustments. It was a big play - why wouldn't you use one of your TOs in that situation?
And for the record, on the ensuing play Robertson threw an incomplete pass., and then Nova missed a FG.

Not the only good things:

Erv looked really good on kickoff returns.
Tyson-Gulley did what he does with that nice run in the first.
Ishmael played well - got two grabs down field.
With a slightly slower QB we end up with 5+ sacks easy. Lots of pressure just a second late, Robertson is an escape artist.
Wilson had that drive that looked pretty good. 6-7.
The bubble screens that were bad throws or drops will be cleaned up, just like last season. When they caught them - a handful went for 5-10 yards.
Ashton looked good in the first.
Hunt would have scored running the ball in a couple of times. Wilson is very limited on the ground.
Moving Thompson around seemed to work. Guy is a beast.
Crume played pretty well.
That almost pick by one of our LB's was very close and required a lot of athleticism and concentration.
West is good at picking up cheap pass interference calls.
Adonis had a nice burst that was not there 50 pounds ago.
Moore shed a lot of weight.
Dixon is a very good punter.
Our new KO guy was pretty good (outside of the one out of bounds).

One horrible game followed by two weeks will result in some very spirited practices. I expect a huge jump in efficiency, points, and a tighter D.

It's difficult to not be gun shy from the GRob years - every year we were promised a new and better team and every year was worse than the previous. I still have hope with this crew of coaches because Shafer is a hard nosed SOB. He'll be the one to right the ship, I really believe that.

I dont know what board you were reading but there were a handful at best of people predicting a close game vs Nova. Most of the people moaning and groaning are your brethren who predicted an ass whooping.

I really don't think you can be too negative about last night. It took a missed 25 yd fg, a fake FG, and a stopped 2-pt conversion to avoid losing at home to a FCS team. Nova dominated the 2nd half of that game and choked it away.

Obviously it's one game, but can anyone who was talking 8-9 wins feel good about that performance?

I'll get killed for this but does the Fort Drum trip take away from more productive practices to zone in on execution and various other factors. No doubt it is a wonderful and humbling experience. A moral builder as well, perhaps. I did not see a tough team and one that executed much of anything yesterday.

Considering the level of competition and the fact it was the season opener, this game was far worse than GA Tech

Not even close, IMO Did you go to the GT game? They are both bad but a game that was WON can never be worse than a 55-0 beat down. I have a tough time there, if we lost than we could debate

Really? fort drum is the problem, What

I predicted 8 wins and I am sticking to it. We will Homer our way through this schedule.

There really isn't anything good that came out of last night. This quite easily could have been the most disappointing performance I have ever seen from a Syracuse Football team. We finally get to the point where we feel we have turned the corner, and are back to being a real Football program and then last night happened. I feel part of the uproar and avalanche of negativity came from the expectations we had going into the season. I finally felt we got back to the level where we could compete talent wise with everyone on our schedule minus FSU and Clemson. There is absolutely no excuse for what happened last night. None! You had all off-season to get prepared for that team, and had absolutely no reason not to be fired up to play opening the season in your building. Our coaching staff was thoroughly exposed. I was skeptical going into the season, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt being it their first seasons here, breaking in a new qb, and any other excuse I could come up with. Well unfortunately last night proved that we are rarely going to be able to out scheme the opponent. I really don't think this is an overreaction either. In 2012, with far less overall talent, I had confidence in every single game we went into. We may not win, but I felt we had a chance in every single game because we were most likely going to out scheme you. There was a plan going into each game, and then there were adjustments. That didn't happen last year, and it certainly didn't happen last night. I also don't want to hear about how Villanova is good. Sure they are good, and even better coached, but still we have absolutely no excuse for not winning by multiple td's. To a man our offensive line had 50lbs on the man in front of them. Nova's db's and wr's were tiny. They really only had 1 player, their qb. Unlike other sports having an advantage in the coaching box is arguably more important then having the advantage on the field. So while our talent has increased there has been a significant downgrade in the coaching. I can't even imagine what would have happened if we did not get that fake fg. The fact alone that it was called was alarming. You do not go for a fake FG at home with an OL that is 50lbs bigger to a man on the 4 inch line. If you can't pump that in with distance and that situation then you don't deserve to win. Hell we didn't deserve to win anyways.

I guess what I am trying to say is I am extremely disappointed. Honestly I didn't find any joy in the win. Disappointed, depressed, dumbfounded, and dreadful round out my feelings. Bare minimum this team is talented enough to win 6 games, but with that performance we'd be lucky to eek out 3.

Finally this is a critical year for us. We cannot afford a slip up. I really hope Shafer, his coordinators, and the players figure it out real quick or it could get really ugly.
they should of been able to run the ball against Villanova as you said they had 50lbs on Nova d-line. Mcdonald can recruit but not so sure he was ready to be an Offensive Coordinator. It is getting old getting excited for a football season every year and then having them let me down every year. Maybe they should end the fort Drum affiliation and concentrate on football instead of playing paint ball? Too early to breakout the can't wait for basketball season post but but friday night sure made me think it.

The coaching is certainly worrisome. I think we have the players to win 8 or even 9 games, but I now doubt that they will be put in the right positions with the best schemes to succeed. I hope the coaches figure this out with all the time off. It was only one game and we have plenty of mistakes to learn from.

We're better than that, just some mind-boggling decisions. Rough that we all know we can't blame it on Hunt's ejection either.

I think more people need to give Villanova credit. That's a good team. They will challenge for the FCS championship at least, and we saw what a pain FCS teams have been for FBS teams this week. They have a long-time and accomplished head coach. They came into the game ranked in the FCS Top 10 and were probably underrated. Their QB is ridiculous. And despite all of that if Hunt hadn't gotten thrown out SU would have won by a couple of touchdowns.

I'm not worried and I'm still excited about this season.

This. Lots and lots to fix - but last year we saw that the staff can get this team better week to week.
