Transfer portal seems pretty picked over for point guards, but is there anyone we're targeting?

Any international prospects we might chase?

Feels like we are an experienced point guard prospect [preferably one who can shoot] away from this being a really deep, interesting roster.

I'm choosing to believe Gerry has some reserve to see how 5 to play 5 shakes out.

Very concerned that our roster is interesting more due to new faces than being interesting because it features overwhelming talent.

Right now we have 1 actual point guard on the roster, and behind him there's an undersized incoming freshman and a bunch of wings that would have to cover minutes initiating the offense. I don't see how that's a winning combination.

Just came across a You Tube clip by Adrian Wojnarowski where he talks with Jonathan Givony (Draft Express) about roster building and international players. Not sure how it works regarding international guys and when the portal window opens and closes.

Have heard they're only paying 10 players as primary guys.

If that's the case, I'm not sure if there are any of those spots left. Have to presume the Siena backup C is one that isn't 'paid'. Don't think Moesch is on same level as the other guys.

Seems like there's one more 'paid' position and one more 'developmental' add left.

Get ready for Dual to play 40 min per game...I hope hes is good
Do you really think that’s Gerry’s plan? Sometimes players are given a promise for a starting position and sometimes players are given a chance to compete.

My personal opinion is that Jerry has exactly who he wants for point guard and Dual was promised the starting position. Therefore, a backup point guard is not a priority now, but he will eventually get the best possible player he can get that understands their role will be to be a backup, who has a chance to earn more minutes if he is good enough. That could be a fifth year senior, or someone who’s pretty good who did not find the landing spot they wanted, and so was willing to come here, knowing they’re not going to be the starter. Or it may be a very good Freshman or Sophomore who feels they could be the starter next year . That may take a little time to shake out.

(wing is different, Doty committed, knowing Anthony was still here, Tobiason committed knowing both were here, and MMM committed, knowing all three were here. So it seems that Gerry will be content to see how wing players shake out, and no one was promised anything there, more than an opportunity to compete, so those spots were filled more quickly).

Folefac took longer because it was known that if he was coming here he was coming to be the backup, so he also explored starting position opportunities. Backup point guard should have the same dynamic.

If the roster is set, from my perspective, GMAC has done well building it. After a horrible season, we did well being able to keep Sadiq and Kiyan. Coach brought with him players he knows and coached up which is a plus. The portal guys are solid college players.

Being who we are as a program the past several years, it was a long shot getting Estrella, Mingo, or any of the top portal guys or decommits. This season will be about GMAC’s ability to coach and keep his team motivated and engaged, win or lose. If he can do that, as many good coaches have done with average or nondescript teams, we will make the tournament and set ourselves up to be able to have a better chance when we go after the big name players next year.

After the last few years, I've kind of given up predicting how players will fare after they change teams/systems.

Go look at two threads to remind yourself: Jaquon Carlos and William Kyle... Carlos was supposed to be a game changer and the savior at PG. With William Kyle a lot of people didn't think he could start at center and was potentially a rotational PF.

Typically we're all wrong one way or another on transfers. I doubt anyone was super excited for Elijah Hughes' 7 ppg at East Carolina and I think people were high on Eddie Lampkin.

Long story short, who the hell knows.

Same here. I’m banking on what translates no matter what league the guy is in.

Wingspan, height, weight, Free throws, taking care of the ball.

Shooting %’s and assists and way too many of the offensive metrics can just be gamed.

Donnie has awesome metrics but in 2 years in Orange never beat a quad 1 team.

I don't recall Carlos ever being looked at as a savior for the PG position. I remember many being a little apprehensive about him being added to the roster. However, then there were some reports that he was killing it in practice which raised expectations.

As for Hughes... I got excited about him because Boeheim kept hinting that he was going to be a really good player for us and this was before Boeheim just started saying things.

That all said, I agree that we don't really know much at this point. While I'm wishing for the best, I'm pretty underwhelmed.

I thought he was talking in general about how teams might have spent their NIL already.
It’s about the 30:30 mark. He was saying if the 5 on 5 was approved freeing 100 or so 5th year players that could flood the market, many teams like us have spent much of their NIL $ (obviously hurting their ability to compete in the 5 on 5 market). That’s all.

Gmac said they aren’t done adding yet
They better not be. I’m ehhhhh on this current roster. I think it can surprise me. But I don’t think it’s leap and bounds better than what we had the last few years. I think defensively we will be MUCH improved. Length we have improved. I like the versatility. I think we are much more fundamentally sound and higher basketball IQ players. I think we lack a little athleticism at some spots and I’m worried more offensively. I don’t think we have a “go to” guy. And I really thought GMAC would be able to get a solid lead point guard. Which I guess he still could but he whiffed. Realllllly thought we were gonna get Wilkins and we had him and were about to wrap things up before UK up’ed their offer big time. This roster we have now, with Wilkins as the PG would be a really good team.
