Now we can see why Boeheim wants to go to Italy...

Dominated midnight madness? Really? I don't remember if he did or didn't but if you're gonna use a midnight madness which is nothing more than playground 1 on none basketball, then you must remember that a lot of the talk after it was about Cooney. Here's one articles quote about him.

" Keep in mind that little-to-no defense is played during the scrimmage, so it’s hard to make good observations about players. But Trevor Cooney is one player who really stuck out. His shot looked so pure as he hit multiple three-point shots."

From most reports the problem with Trevor has not been how he has practiced but how little of that translated to game performance. That is unusual. That does not mean that MGs good practice performances won't translate.

I now think of Cooney like a BMK or Andy type. It will take time, like years.

Next years ceiling would be greatly enhanced by developing MG into the role of dominant sg. The bulk of the minutes at sg should go to MG from the start in order to enhance the end of season potential.

All that said - all it really takes is for Cooney's shot to start falling and his confidence to come up some. He showed this year that he has several facets to his game, not just shooting.

I'll bet you a pre-paid year's subscription to the payside that Cooney begins the season as the starting 2 guard and Silent but Deadly fills the Dion Waiters role as super sixth man
Silent but deadly! :)

Actually it is to make up for missing out going to Disney World because he had to go Atlanta.

Silent but deadly! :)

Any word on other OOC opponents? Villanova? Hoyasuxa? And do we do the ACC-B1G challenge or do we sit out a year on that?

Typically the weakest ACC teams sit out the ACC-Big Ten Challenge when the ACC has had more schools. This upcoming year the ACC will have 3 more schools than the Big Ten. Going by last season's results VT, Clemson, and Wake Forest would be the three to sit it out because Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Pitt all made the NCAA tournament and would each increase the odds of the ACC winning those matchups.

When the Big Ten gets to 14 the following season, then only 1 team would sit it out.

Is Sgt Cuse one of the coaches? It certainly sounds like it. Either that or he needs to use his crystal ball to make some money on Wall St.
I can understand liking a player, but Sgt Cuse is in bed with MG. Or possibly an unpaid agent/PR man.
MG may be a starter, but he has to prove it. I'm glad JB doesn't subscribe to the pre-ordained method of player selection.

In fairness, there is every reason to think MG will have a great chance to start and play a major role on next years team. I know he hasn't played in games for us, but he has an awful lot of time in the system now and was a very highly rated recruit out of HS. I know we don't put much stock in midnite madness, but he certainly didn't do anything to make us question his abilities.

The reasons why I would take that bet are:

Cooney's Big East numbers were:
19/64 FG for .297%; 10/45 3FG for .222%; 0/2FT; 16rebs; 8assist; 9 steals; 10TOs.

This is over 22 games and 208 mins played, but even more concerning are his true road game numbers:

3/18FG for .167%; 1/12 3FG for .083%; 2/4FT; 5rebs; 9assist; 1 steal; 2TOs.

This was over 9 games and 80 mins played.

I am hoping MG is the starter right now because I did not think Cooney's performance was one of a starter in a top flite program. I am hoping/thinking that MG would have been better. That, to me, makes it his job to lose.

I, too, hope JB doesn't subscribe to the pre-ordained method. Because it is the pre-ordained crowd that is giving Cooney the start.

MG has already done the Wes J impersonation all last season. What he will be doing in Italy is showing that it translates to the games. Does anyone really think MG wouldn't have been the 3rd guard going into the NCAAT last year?

MG is not a neophyte. He is as much a neophyte as WesJ was. He has a full year in our system, another in Dukes. He is probably as old as Cooney. And he was higher rated.

Yes, prior to last season the starting gig in '13-'14 was Cooney's job to lose. And he lost it. It is now MG's job.
The dude couldn't get off the bench at Duke on a 7 loss team that lost in the first round. Why do people think he will be a star at SU?

Your fantasy quotient must have expired, Capt.

And if Dion had transferred out to Duke, a poster there, Capt Dukkle, would be saying:

"The dude couldn't start on an 8 loss team, I don't know why anyone would think he'll be any good"

What is it that makes you so sure?

A ouija board?
A crystal ball?
An oracle from somewhere? (Delphi or Delhi, NY?)

Because if you are extrapolating from what we have actually seen this year and predicting a 30 game starter from that you must have special powers or some help from somewhere.

I hope the kid is GMac or better. But at this point, I'm a Cooney-doubter. I hope he comes back a much better player, but "hope" is all I have. That and the fact that we have seen some remarkable improvements from year to year (Fab Melo comes to mind)[/quo

unfortunately i agree with this. all the talk about Cooney being a deadly shooter in practice is inaccurate. being able to knock down open uncontested shots in drills is completely different from making them in scrimmage or game situations. from that information along with every tid bit i have read it feels like Silent G and Buss will have shots at big PT

At least he would have seen Dion play which is more than any of us can say about MG.
