NY Mets 2024-2025 offseason thread

How does this company make money? Are the Syracuse Mets profitable?
I don’t think so. Believe we finished second last in the league in attendance. It is rising but not where it should be.

and I assume the Mets are in line with what, half the teams in this groups portfolio?

I know Binghamton has dismal attendance. Worse even than the Syracuse Mets.

To me, it seems like an awful area to be investing money. That is probably why Steve Cohen decided to get rid of these. He only bought them a few years ago.

The Syracuse Mets do not own the stadium. Onondaga County does. The lease the Syracuse Mets have with the county expires in 2043. So I think things are on relatively solid ground until around then.

Attendance has been slowly increasing.

The S Mets actually finished 16th out of 20 teams in attendance in the IL this year. They were last or second last the last couple of years, if memory serves.

I think having the Mets as the farm club is helping. Their games are all on TV, the Mets are the second most popular team in the area and the quality of the team seems to be improving over time. That trend should continue, based on the ratings experts have been giving for the Mets farm system.

Hopefully next season we finish in the top half of the league in attendance. It is a stretch goal but I think it is possible.

Well it will help that it looks like Mets won't trade a lot of prospects away for Crochet.

I really hope they are planning to sign Burnes... this team desperately needs a proven ace.

From everything I have read, that is extremely unlikely. Stearns dislikes long term expensive deals for pitchers in their 30s. And losing draft picks signing a free agent who shunned the qualifying offer is something he reportedly wants to avoid.

They might trade for a starter. Castillo from the Mariners sounds like a real possibility.

Glad the Mets did not get Crochet. I think there is a good chance he ends up being nothing special. That was a big gamble by the Red Sox to land him.

Rory Sosaki is a name to key an ee on.

Agree on Roki... but as Stearns says, gotta operate as if he is going somewhere else.

I just hope he doesn't go to the Dodgers.

“We’d love to bring Pete back,” Stearns said Monday. “Pete’s been a great Met. He had some enormous hits for us and we’ll see where that goes.”

“A lot of market locomotion regarding Pete. The Polar Bear Express is rolling,” said Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent. “Power in this game is such a commodity.”

"In the end, what Juan Soto felt was comfort.

“It seems like they are the right family — a family that wants to win but definitely that wants to take care of their players and their families,” he said. “Coming from the owner that does that, it’s really special.
He felt that over the long term, he and his family would be most comfortable in this environment,” Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, said. “That was the decision that was of most priority to him.”

[The money and the years had nothing to do with it. His family would have been worse off if he didn't sign this contract.]

The Big Three.

That was a hell of a grouping of broadcasters to start with, and they started a tradition of greatness in the broadcasting booth for the Mets that continues to this day.

That's what has kept me attached to the Mets for 40 years. Every other team I've had an emotional commitment to either represented Syracuse or had a star player from Syracuse.

"That might mean the Mets prefer homegrown star Pete Alonso to return on a shorter deal rather than conceding entirely if Alonso’s desired figures run on the long end. That might mean a reluctance to go five years, possibly even four years, for Sean Manaea, a pitcher they’d like to re-sign. And it might mean wanting Walker Buehler, someone who’d fit in well with them, for something like a one-year deal with an option rather than a straight multiyear pact."

"Advanced defensive metrics, supported by opinions from rival scouts, suggest Soto is mediocre in right field. But the Mets believe Soto can improve his glove.

“I think he is probably about a league average right fielder, and we think he has the ability to get better,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said. “And that’s something that we actually talked to Juan about during our meetings with him. He is very motivated to continue to improve, to improve his defense. He got better this past year, and we think he can take another step forward.”

The Mets gave their fans a late Christmas present this morning by signing Sean Manaea to a 3 year contract.

Still hoping Roki can be signed but at this point, the rotation appears to be done. I think all that is needed for pitching is to add a left handed reliever. Tanner Scott would be nice but probably is not in the cards.

The only remaining big objective on the hitter side is to solve the problem of how to fill the empty spot at 1B. At this point, it looks like it is going to be the Polar Bear returning or Bregman. If Bregman comes, Vientos would move to first.

Sounds like the cost would be about the same for both.

I am guessing the Mets sign Bregman. I think Stearns values defense and he is a gold glover. Would give the Mets better defense at 3B and even in his first year at 1B, I suspect Vientos would be better than Pete.

That said, it would be sad to see Pete go. Glad this is not my decision to make.

I have seen some stories that the Mets may be pursuing both Alonso and Bregman. That would be sweet since it’s not my money. Pete’s potential landing spots have dwindled quite a bit with all the recent 1B signings. I’m not totally sold on the pitching staff construct at this point but Stearns knows way more than me. Fingers crossed for some more good news.

I think Mets get one of Roki, Buehler and Flaherty. But it won’t happen until RokI signs somewhere.

I also think there is a small chance Mets might get Bregman and Alonso… that move would make them competitive w the Dodgers, I don’t think Pete alone would do that. Between the two I would prefer Pete, but I doubt Stearns has that same attachment. Pete really should have taken that extension last year.

The list of possible starters is pretty long now...

Senga
Manaea
Holmes
Peterson
Montas
Canning
Blackburn
Megill
Butto
Scott*

You can pretty much bank on one or two of these guys getting hurt before spring training ends, and a couple more going down before the all star break. I think overall, starting pitching depth is pretty good now. You can argue the quality is not there but Holmes and Montas have really good stuff and I think the Mets have proven they can get something out of pitchers with good stuff.

If there was any doubt Butto was going to stay in the bullpen, I think that is gone now, at least for now.

As mentioned, I think at least one quality arm needs to be added to the bullpen. Preferably a lefty.

Diaz
Nunez
Butto
Garrett
Brazoban
Young
Megill?

*=expected out all 2025 for TJ surgery

Will the Mets get Roki Sasaki? If they do, it would them up nicely for a six man rotation, which would be good for Senga, and I think for Holmes, moving to starting, and Montas, who has had arm problems. Keeping the innings pitched relatively low should help everyone stay healthy.

Yeah moving Vientos to DH and having a nice rotation to give Pete and Alex days off from the field here and there would be great. Would certainly help with no longer having a DH rental around,

If you can have a healthy 6 most of the year that would be great. We were another big bat and Senga being ready from possibly beating the Dodgers this year….

I would be happier with one ace though… these guys are all number 2 pitchers or worse. But maybe the Dodgers proved that you don’t need an ace to win the WS… they hit their way to the title.
