very skeptical of judging anything based on facebook likes

maybe some places are just different on the amount of things that people want to see in their feed

Agree to an extent. Aside from TV, Facebook is probably one thing Americans spend most of their free time viewing/interacting. We trust ratings/TV numbers, so I'd say this is about as accurate as we're likely to get with regards to this type of study.

You're right to be skeptical, but that map looks pretty correct to me.

TV ratings are derived from an exhaustive methodological process. Facebook likes are subject to quite a bit of bias.

The most accurate study for this is done by surveying respondents on their level of college football fan avidity, segmented by region.

Like I said to Millhouse, this map is a pretty good approximation of that more rigorous process.

looks like the dumber parts of the country

just out of curiosity, what do you know about TV ratings?

Not that I know much, but 1 of my good friends used to work for Neilson - he said its such an inexact science that he puts no weight into the ratings.

Yeah, looks right to me. The NE, CA, non-P5 states, and major cities with lots of pro sports franchises are going to have less interest in college football. Hard to debate that. Texas is a bit of a puzzler. You'd think it would be more purple. But again the big cities probably have less interest in college sports and W. and S. Texas are more Mexican, poorer, and less wired than other parts of the state.

I've worked with TV ratings for 20 years.

I have no idea what your friend did for Nielsen, but his comment is a little silly. It's not perfect. It's also one of the best maintained research panels in the world. Billions of dollars are traded on TV ratings.

Fair enough. Im not going to get into a debate with you as you clearly know more than my 2nd hand knowledge.

He was a territory manager. So not very high up. Possibly disgruntled former employee.

I suspect he didn't have a very intricate knowledge of how the Nielsen measurement process works.

I mean, I live it and there are loads of problems, don't get me wrong. But to suggest that they're worthless isn't fair at all. Compared to the vast majority of junk research I see peddled on a daily basis, they're a gold standard.
