Observations on Terrel Hunt

Id really like him to work on reads and accuracy. OUr guys dont have the athleticism to beat many teams deep down the field right now. I think it's more important that he hit the slants and curls. I think that mcdonalds offense is a spread anyhow, which is based on short quick throws. Like was mentioned, pop passes to TEs over the middle would be a big development.

Our guys didn't have the athleticism to beat ACC DB's. I bet the freshman that do see the field will be much better at beating their man (Looking at you Cooper and Ishmael).

I think Terrel Hunt still has a great deal of upside. In terms of his abilities I think he's fairly average, fairly average arm strength and speed, but the key is it's enough to leverage. He is fast enough to have the edge against the typical front defender and break into the second level consistently. His arm doesn't wow you, but it's strong enough to deliver the ball well in the short and medium ranges, yet capable enough to take a deep shot often enough to keep the secondary honest.

I disagree with those discounting his athleticism, he's got very good size for a QB and throughout the season took some big hits and never looked rattled. He's a tough customer, and has a reputation as a very hard worker in the weight room. Sure he's not blazing fast, but as I said, he's fast enough. And he is very shifty for a big guy and runs with great vision.

I agree with the thoughts on what he brings in terms of leadership and intangibles, it was clear early on that there was a different energy surrounding the team when he finally got in against Northwestern and then again with Wagner, the team just seemed to respond to him and the difference was conspicuous.

The more this kid sees game situations, and more importantly game speed, the obvious improvements he needs to make in the passing game (speeding up decision making, exploiting coverages and reads, anticipating windows and seams, delivery and touch on the ball) are going to accelerate.

I had a great view for one of them. The TE, maybe Moore, dropped it.
Eskeridge dropped one and Cornelius the other I think, remember Durrell played a little wideout that game. One thing I have to say is Tom Savage played great that game especially after the D layed the hits to him. Was real hardnosed , I'm sure Scott appreciated it.

Good call. That photo was from bc game where Moore dropped the td. Was getting the mixed up.

But still, I look at illegal procedure and delay of game calls on the O line, backs, ends, etc., a function of poor communication. Usually that happens because things are rushed. When things are rushed, maybe that's because it's taking too long to choose the next play and get it in, with the right personnel grouping.

It's all about being decisive, and having the players know what it is you're trying to do. You expect that to get better with experience, and we are bringing back a pretty solid group for next year.

Not fast but very athletic, i watched the tape of the last couple games and marveled at the fact that the first tackler could never get him and often not the second and third. He has room for improvement throwing for sure but I have a lot of confidence in TH

He's good at making the first guy miss, and he runs with surprising power inside. He's got balls. He is a leader. Can he be a good enough player, demonstrate enough skills to allow us a chance to win the big games, that's the question for this year.

Hunts a leader and very driven...how can you not admire this guy? It seems his teammates do as well and you can't force this kind of thing, it's earned.

Lester has his work cut out for him. Not only who's #1 which we think will be Hunt but the snaps and reps from there in practice. Very very curious to see how this young qb's separate themselves regarding skill, leadership and picking up the playbook. It's a great problem to0 have but still...he has to be a helluva tactician when it comes to dealing with these talented qb's...and a master physiologist as well. Did Loeb decide to stick around and help?

If open competition means equal reps that could be problematic. Hunt needs as many reps as possible. This is a difficult management problem. Glad I don't have to make it.

That's the delicate balance that Lester/SS have. You have 4 kids coming in that thought they had a shot at qb1 and then all of a sudden Hunt starts to solidify his position. Glad I don't have to either but love to be a fly on the wall and watch.

Another double post. Anywho...love to see which qb's can make people miss and hit the throws.

It's one thing to be good in practice, and entirely another in real games where defensive players don't care if your injured and out for the season , which Hunt has already faced.

I think he played better at the end because the staff was desperate for wins and didn't hold anything (ie Hunt running) back.

I wonder with Wilson and Kimble on deck if we'll see more of that this season, assuming Hunt remains the starter.

That reminds me of when Graves was at SU. Once that bowl game came around it seemed like he ran more often that any other time during the season.

I'd have to assume that the better or more those two show the more the coaches will have Hunt run. They had Allen and Loeb behind Hunt last season and that was a lot of experience, this season...not so much. Talent, but not a lot of experience.

There was also increased play from the WR position. Cornelius was a nice surprise.

Expecting solid improvement from Hunt. He knows it's his job to lose and he has embraced that. Kid is working his balls off to be great.

I'll bet on a proven winner over a recruit any day. I love all of our QB recruits. But they are roster guys until they prove otherwise. At this stage, I expect Hunt to start the next two seasons, and provide us with the highest level of QB play we have had since McNabb -- and yes that includes Nassib's senior year. There, I said it.

Im really pulling for TH. Great kid faith based super leader has the total respect of his mates and he is a gamer. I think that he is going to play lights out this year and remain our starter until he graduates. Love this kid

Hunt is a leader and that is something you can't coach. From his very first snap you could tell who this team thought should be at QB, now it's up to him to take it to the next level. Hunt could end up a great college QB whose skill set doesn't translate to the NFL...he's a lot like Tim Tebow in leadership and skill when you think about it.

I'm not high on hunt but everyone worries too much about speed with ball carriers. (not so much in this thread but others) making people miss, having good vision, being hard to tackle, not being tentative - all more important than speed.

it's not like McNabb was some kind of track star.

there are plenty of reasons why hunt might be unseated but it has nothing to do with his running

Actually McNabb was pretty darn fast as was Donnie McPherson.

I think Alin Edouard has a bit of Denard Robinson in him when it comes to pure speed.

And I like that a lot in QBs.

I agree except Alin is actually a QB playing QB while Robinson was a RB playing QB.

I expect Alin to put up very good passing numbers over his career.

Kid is a gamer. I want to see who can take the job away from him. Good luck to any challengers.

What about a new starting center (Emerich, Trudo, Miller?)? How does that impact the QB contest? Somebody smarter than me has got to have some insight.

I have no doubt the starting center next season will be Emerich. They have been grooming him for the position for 2 years. The old staff loved him, and if the new staff had other ideas Emerich wouldn't have spelled Mackey when he was banged up for a few series last season. Emerich is the man to beat, and i have no doubt he will be a solid 3 year starter.

I'll say it again and again, Big 33 guy. Big 33 guy.

Yes please!

Don't overlook Trudo in a position change.
