Yes, I agree. But I don't think our guys do it without a lot of thought. They have measurables in mind. They look at sophomore and junior tapes. They get them up here for unofficial visits and junior days. It just all seems much more organized and social media savvy than they ever have done before.
I remember under Doug Marrone, they made a big deal out of the coaches all sitting around a table writing hand written notes to prospects. Wow - do people even READ letters anymore? Then under Shafer, Coach McCool tried to use social media, but was an amateur at it. Look at the consistently pleasing graphics we put out. We are at the very cutting edge of cool right now. Dino is so hot, and so good on TV.
A lot of their offers are going to kids at traditionally strong HS programs, where we can make an inroad and get the "second tier" guys from that school, when the elite guys from that HS might go to a factory school like ND, Alabama, Clemson, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, etc.
And the coaches have generally been to these schools a few times, and are getting known by the coaches. Give some second tiers kids a chance from a great HS, treat the kid well and he develops into a contributor in a couple years, and that coach is going to tell his next star players that your school is worth a look, "look how well they developed that guy".
And of course the camps are very important. They want to see these players in person before they let them commit. I love our approach right now.
The coaches still send out handwritten notes.
