Officially Laying To Rest The Bubble Screen

This play does not work when a team prepared for it and know it's coming. Run a quick slant for crying out loud if you want a high percentage short range pass. The bubble just takes too long to develop and our receivers are proving they can't create any missed tackles.

I only remember us running that three or four times all game. I think we can debate if they were the right times (maybe one was), but we didn't really do it that much.

Bubble screen is our new meme.

it's not the bubble screen that is the issue; it's the poor execution that is. we telegraph the play when we run it and Hunt is to slow and deliberate letting the D easily adjust and shut down the play. On one pay MD ran it with a good playfake to the RB and then quick toss to WR for a decent gain. poor O coaching and poor execution. The combo platter of a loss.

We didn't run it much but outside of the one that worked (to Lewis), the others just stuck out. Phillips getting drilled for a loss of 8, incompletion to Custis on 2nd and 25. Almost feels like a panic call at times. Can't think of anything fast enough and the play clock is ticking so aw hell, bubble screen. Left I guess.

you need fast receivers to run with it along with receivers who want to block for their teammates with an attitude...something we can't seem to put 2 and 2 together

That being said...
It basically killed 2 drives that I remember

Yep. They were memorable plays, but we don't do it nearly as much as it gets talked about.

It has its purpose but served none against Maryland.
We rarely threw it yesterday. One one Custis dropped it when he had running room and on another Flemming missed his block. Still another Moore couldn't hold his block.

Maryland was looking for the bubble all day and we ran inside and threw slants instead. The bubble set them up in the games leading up to this one.

Are you suggesting that we might have gotten so many yards because of our bubble tendency?

Mind blown!

But seriously Crusty, it shows you've put some time in to this. Thanks for the quality analysis.

I really think McD set up MD with all the bubbles. Just look at how quickly the LB's moved to the falt when they thought it might be a bubble. They were clearly looking for it. Any team looking at the tapes of our three games will have their hands full. We showed an abundance of the quick game and then changed pace. I liked it.

I've been saying it for two weeks. The threat of the bubble is important to this offense. It would be more effective if the bubble were more effective, but it's important nonetheless.

Absolutely. The WR need to get better at blocking and holding blocks. I would like to see more tunnel /slip screens and RB screens to mix it up more. Maybe run some dual screens - we have the personnel to run duals.

Hopefully, more and more posters will have a better understanding of this. You need to show a willingness to attack the perimeter in the Spread to open up the inside zone read option.

Maryland obviously game planned to blow up the bubble, and they got gouged by the inside running game. Even some/most of Hunt's runs were a part of that. It looks like GMac anticipated that and game planned for it. Good sign, BTW.

Do we suck at bubble screens? Yup (I still think it is an execution issue, and I think the WR should use cut blocks)

Should we keep running them? Yup

Will the majority here understand why? Uh...probably not.

Spread to run works without having to throw bubble screens to covered guys

Yeah - but not as well. Eventually you need to attack the edges.

Also: the are not always covered.
Also: Eagles threw 3 today to "covered" guys.

We had one correct bubble screen yesterday and gasp they got ten yards

With other types of options no one says the qb has to get stuffed to set up a pitch or handoff. Why is the bubble screen different?

If we had a QB who could throw the ball quickly ... if we had WRs who could block ... if we had WRs who could catch ... blah blah blah

I fully agree and that was my point. McDonald did not use it as they couldn't rush the qb. It has it's purpose but not vs Maryland.
