Officially Laying To Rest The Bubble Screen

If we had a QB who could throw the ball quickly ... if we had WRs who could block ... if we had WRs who could catch ... blah blah blah
it still wouldn't matter because the defense always has enough guys because they know how much our coaches just don't get it

We had one correct bubble screen yesterday and gasp they got ten yards

With other types of options no one says the qb has to get stuffed to set up a pitch or handoff. Why is the bubble screen different?

No one is saying you hope to get stuffed - you hope for a good block and one broken tackle for 10+ yds. But if it only gets 2-3, it's still setting up multiple looks and spreading the defense E/W you live with it. I thought this game - they ran the play the right amount of times, IMO.

You're still looking at it wrong. Lots of teams run up the gut and gain 1yd and then again for 4 and then again for 3 - all to setup the play action pass. The more effective the run the more effective the play action. Now, think of that same play as the bubble screen. You fake wide and hand off up the middle (where our RB's had a filed day against Maryland) or you run the QB away from the screen side (where Hunt ran for tons) or you have your WR fake the bubble and double move (why a lot of guys were open, even if Hunt doesn't see them).

Those teams suck. That's a good way to setup a punt.

Agreed. Those teams are stuck in the past.

What we run has a bunch more options and every play out of it moves the ball pretty well. The only play that sucks is the bubble itself. But if they ran it less and had one get 10 yds the per attempt number is probably on the rise. Much like last year - in the BC and Minny games we were running it well and no one was complaining.
