Ohio State's Pursuit of Boeheim Years Ago

I never took the story all that seriously.

But, according to Brent Musberger, on the telecast tonight, that Boeheim was offerred the job and was set to go, but changed his mind to coach Derrick Coleman and others.

Interesting. I never thought that any offer was made or that JB would have ever thought of leaving.

It was in the early 80's. Not sure if Ohio State offered JB, but he was on the short list. It was about the time when Pearl Washington was about to start at SU.

Heck I thought Boeheim was gone after the press here gave Magic the MVP over Marty Byrnes in the Carrier Classic. "Only in Syracuse"

If that story is true, we owe even more credit to DC, otherwise who knows where our program would be right now. It's funny when you find out how different things could have been.
We would probably have lived through "The Tom Penders" era.

At one point, Mussberger was talking about this great young nucleus Gtown has...setting up Knight for a comment heading toward Overtime...Knight pauses and starts talking about Withey from Kansas. LMAO Knight has become the dottering old loveable grandfather.
There was at least one other time during the game when Knight could not remember the names of players. He said sonething like "and he passed to the other guy"

I listen to Knight when he talks about what a player is suppose to do but his knowing what player is who is below average but again, I could listen to him all day regarding his knowledge of the game.

i'd need more verification than mussturd.and while we're on it knight and bm blow as a team imo. SNORE!!!!!
JB has been asked in interviews if he had received offers to leave, including to the NBA. His response has been that the only real opportunity was the OSU job, which was offered to him in the late '80's, and which he turned down. Gary Williams ended up taking the job--and I would guess JB recommended him.

It seems that Brent finds one player from one of the teams he is about to watch and then talks about them the whole game. That way he doesn't have to learn the rest of the players names. Today it was Otto Porter. He was practically calling him the national freshman of the year. I think that Kentucky has at least three freshman better than him, although he does look like a keeper.

On a Gtown putback last night Musberger gave credit to MCW, mentioning his hometown and all, as ol Brent was clearly looking at the wrong roster following the basket made by the player wearing #1 for Gtown. And MCW was actually in the game at that point no less.

Musberger reported last night that Boeheim told him that the job was offerred - that JB said he was planning to take the job, but that he changed his mind because he felt an obligation to coach Coleman et al.

So, according to Boeheim, the OSU job was offerred to him and it was after Pearl.
