OK if Temple can bring its FB Program out from the sewer

Looking back at the season I would agree with GO, it is a process for sure. the improvment isn't always a straight line process. I could have lived with 5-7 if we had a bunch of young skill guys playing and a young O Line as well, this is what concerns me but it doesn't mean that marrone can't come back and go 9-4 next year but it also doesn't mean we won't be 4-8 next year either. Next year and year 5 to me is judgement day for Marrone. That said, I really think this season was a GROB type effort, yeah I know it was 5-7 not 3-9 but it still sucked really bad and when that happens it will all fall on the head coach, that is to be expected.

The D stunk but we know from past experience that Shafer is more than capable, I just don't know if what we are trying to do on specials and offense will ever work under Marrone. I just wish he would take over as the OC, hire a specials/ TE coach, and a qb coach with some gray hair ( a resume that shows contacts the ability to get good players and a pattern of success of making qb's better) That said, I believe that Marrone has a lot of faith in Hackett and who knows maybe he is right. At the end of the day, he needs to be comfortable with his assistants. Having a engaging personality doesn't make a great recruiter, contacts and street cred do, IMO.

If one ever listens to Dan Hawkins on satellite radio, he talks all the time of the importance of facilities as well, which is always going to hurt our program. But what does Hawkins know I guess.. I would rather take the word of an internet forum guru

I started Thread asked a question why can't SU improve like Temple . Got a lot of good opinion why the comparison is not a good one for a number of reasons and some reasons why Temple might be better than SU at this point. In retrospect, as an Orange fan, I was judging why we should ever be in such a position to compare SU to Temple. Instead of deplorable it s/b disheartening. Is SU bad? relatively yes. (Not really debatable but % of those on board will say no) Can it get better? I don't know. (Opinions range from no because we are small private school with no $ to yes cause we are going to ACC) How?Wish I knew. (opinions say new coach, new assistants, new facilities, jucos, more $ etc. but what really works?) Are we progressing? Can't say yes after this season so next year we will see even though some of the movers and shakers on this board feel 5-7 is a good prediction.

sooner or later, people who matter will say yes or no on Marrone and if he has capable of getting us back to respectability, people's definition of respectability may differ but I would say 1 win in conference is far from respectable. We had quite a few really bad losses in year 2 as well

That is a huge concern. If Marrone went all in on his guys and all in on his system and just let the chips fall as they may, then I could have lived with a 4-8 season. In that case we would have been playing for the future. However we were playing for now and failed miserably. That is a huge disappointment. Next year will be more of the same. The way Marrone is playing this I don't see a break through year until year 6.

BTW I wish people would use 7-5 as our record last year. Our Ws were artificially inflated by playing 2 1AAs. For Bowl purposes only one counted. We weren't really an 8 W team. Hell we also played arguable the worst 1A team in Akron as well that year. OOC we stunk last year. But had a really good BE season. This year it was the opposite.

Schedule is a big part of it, no one really talks about that. If this year's team played the 2005 schedule, how many wins? Only one team to feast on that year, Buffalo. Other 3 non conf games are UVA (pretty good at the time), @ND, @FSU. But I guess you can assume you find 2 more wins if we all want to think positive.

Last year we started the year with 3 wins before we played a game. If Akron wasn't the worst 1A, then definitely the 2nd worst, not really even up for debate. We needed to go 4-5 otherwise and credit to Marrone, we did it as that was a major upgrade. But you are right, to talk about that in terms of 8 win seasons seems misleading to me by comparison. The kind of 8 win season Rutgers would brag about.

I asked this in another thread but I'll put it up here too for you and anyone to comment on...What is playing the young guys, running a spread type system and doing the things on offense that everyone on this board has suggested resulted in 1-11 or 2-10...Would that have been acceptable?
