It would be very hard to get a HC at that price. Maybe we can try and get Fickell? Withers? Addazio? Butch Jones? Sonny Dykes? Everyone else would be a 1AA HC or a BCS OC/DC.

Ok everyone is now the AD of Syracuse. Doug has two years to go on his contract and you have been given a budget of 1.5m 5year deal to hire a head coach. What do you do going into 12?

I keep Marrone at his salary and use the rest to pay recruits to come to SU.

I think we all understood long ago that you want Marrone fired.

During 2014 I offer to extend Marrone for 5 years at 1.5m per with a discounted buy out clause. Doug being the gamer he is, signs for less (1-1.2ish) contingent on having the extra money available for assistant coaches salaries. I make the announcement during the ribbon cutting ceremony for our new, state of the art, football practice facility but Doug will have known about it many months in advance.

I would spend the $1.5M on new uniforms. Even with no coach at all, I think new uniforms will put them into the BCS championship game.

I do nothing until 12/01/12. On that date I assess where the season has gone, if like this year we have had a complete regression in the performance of the team and if the offense is still in the both 10% of D1, Marrone is gone. If the team has shown steady improvement from the first game of the season to the most recent game and the offense has shown at least some signs of competency then Marrone gets a 5 year extension. Please not I'm not even basing this on the record of the team, I don't even care if the team loses all of it's games, my low bar is that I want a team that gets better from the first game to the last and shows something on offense.

or we resign Marrone at 1 mil per year for 5 years and rent 2 1/2 Cam Newtons per year with the extra half million and play in 5 straight BCS bowls before the NCAA finally steps in and forces Marrone out.

Alice Cooper.

I would give it to DM to go away. The team would do better running itself.

But this is a silly question because with the ACC money we can easily afford more than this. SU just needs to decide if wants to have a real program or not. Marrone is an assistant AD at a DIII school, not a DI head football coach.

I keep Marrone. No brainer. This program was dead and buried. Grob had killed it.

Marrone has resuscitated and stabilized this program.

I know most of you can't get beyond 5-2 to 5-7. That's fine. But your alternatives reek of Fantasy Land.

Les Miles, Nick Saban & Urban Meyer ain't walking through that door.

What would be walking out the door is yet another buyout which we can scarcely afford.

And what would be walking in through the door would be the next hot young commodity who has experienced a sprinkling of success or a lifelong assistant with no head coaching experience.

Turner Gill, anyone? How is he doing these days?

Or, for those of you who are paying attention, and I know at least some of you are, Skip Holtz was, GASP, 5-7 and 1-6 a year after going 8-5 and starting this season with a road win at Notre Dame.

And remember how much success we enjoyed the last time we hired a lifelong assistant?

What does walk through door, if they do have success, will simply be around long enough to wing enough games to get their next gig. And then it is back to square one.

I think that, if Marrone is successful here, he is a lifer. And that is a huge reason to keep him around and give him a lot of rope. Successful lifers become institutions which makes maintaining a successful program a helluva lot easier. Like it or not, unless we have the right individual in place, we are a stepping stone program and not a destination. And that means that you either hire the wrong guy and you blow yourself up or you have to keep hiring the right guy every few years. That is not easy to do.

So, I'll keep Marrone and I'll take the long view. Thank you very much.

BTW, I'm not sure that 1.5MM is going to cover what you'll need to spend to bring in someone who is guaranteed to take this program to the promised land. You'll probably need to add a zero.

This whole post should be tacked to the top of the board and displayed in 24-point bold font.

Only part you left out is about the up-and-coming guys, the ones who really do have it together and who might consider the job as a stepping-stone, who come through the door and see the facilities and think, "How the hell am I going to persuade kids to come here?" and catch the next plane out of town. It's tough enough having to overcome a decade of badness when selling the program; add to that having to explain away the facilities and it becomes a "why bother" decision.

Hire Wayne Fontes to bring in the vaunted Run-n-Shoot. Barry Sanders as new RB coach. Herman Moore WRs, Qbs and OL are not needed with Fontes. Chris Spielman LBs, Ndamukong Suh(after the NFL expels him) DL, Bennie Blades DBs, and Mel Gray ST. Matt Millen equipment specialist.

Seriously though Marrone needs to show us something next year, but any talk of dismissal now is premature.

Equipment specialist? You've been saying for years that Matt Millen wasn't fit to carry their jock straps. :)

Yeah well after further review, holding jock straps seems like a pretty good gig for him.
