For a lane violation.

Seen it both ways on this board. Or is *both* correct?

I believe you have to be behind the part of the 3 pt circle that is beyond the foul line extended.

Both is correct. Also, players must stay in that area until the ball hits the rim. Clark Kellogg misspoke last night when he said until the ball leaves the shooters hand.

Yeah I was surprised he got it wrong, especially after the rule came into play the day before in the SU game. Guys on the lane can release when the shot leaves the shooters hand, guys that are not on the lane slots, including the shooter can't release until the ball hits the rim.

yup - to be official about it, it's NCAA Rulebook Rule 9, Section 1, Article 2g:
Players not in a legal marked lane space shall remain behind the free- throw line extended and behind the three-point field-goal line until the ball strikes the ring, flange or backboard, or until the free throw ends.
IIRC, the ND player last night was borderline as to crossing the free throw line before the ball hit the rim but definitely had crossed the 3 point line.
