Class of 2025 OL Kahlil Stewart (PA) COMMITTED / SIGNED NLI TO SYRACUSE (12/4/24)

He's not enrolling early it sounds like.

To me it's simple - a true freshman has a much better chance of starting if they play spring ball. That doesn't just give them football practice time to settle into the depth chart, but helps them adjust to college life and their classes well ahead of weekly game prep, which I imagine is a difficult thing to balance. With summer workouts (and the proper dedication to S&C that entails) and then fall camp they can be ready to start with far more confidence than if the only practice they have is fall camp. If all they have is fall camp, they basically have to immediately show themselves as the best option. That's a big ask of a player.
Yeah i would put the chance that a true freshman OL or DL, who does not early enroll in the spring, can come in and start right away at probably less than 5%. And while Watson played on the DL as a true freshman, he was an early enrollee. And it wasn't the plan to have him start as a true freshman, but injuries lead to it happening early on.

All players in the class of 2025 already are on an off season training schedule provide by Syracuse. They will send reports to the S&C staff. They also have playbooks. They don’t just show up in August completely “green” opposed to those who are returning. Yes, there is a big jump from high school to college. Keep in mind many of these high schools are ran like college programs. I will use Bishop Gorman here in Vegas as an example. It is more organized and ran better than most D3 schools in the north east. I played section 3 football and can attest most local high schools are like a night and day comparison. St Joes in Philadelphia is very similar. That is where Stewart is coming from. These high schools are national power houses, not local schools.
Having a S&C workout and playbook sent to you is so much different than going through a spring camp of S&C and learning the playbook. And when we have a guy ready on campus to step into the role, we don't need to rush/put unrealistic expectations on a player to be a day one starter.

I can promise you that St. Joe's is not run like a P4 college program.

I agree to a certain extent. I would also say a player on the roster should and will have the edge. I’m simply saying he will come in to compete and have his chance as well. If he’s not ready, he will not win the job.

I agree with those saying it is going to be very hard for Kahlil to come in and start right away.

But, just for the hell of it, I did a little searching to see where he is strength wise at this point.

I am really impressed. He did a 405 bench press in May of last year and just yesterday, he posted a video of him squatting 700.

I am not a religious follower of weight lifting for our recruits but I think having a recruit coming in lifting this much months (for the bp for a full year) before starting summer school at Syracuse is very unusual and special.

Do we have anyone else coming in who has numbers like this? When is the last time we got a player this strong?

Shy Cullen was a weight room freak.
Don’t recall the #’s, but he was a grown-azz MAN when he walked in the door as a Frosh.

DL like Josh Black & McKinley were athletic freaks, but I don’t think they were throwing around that kinda weight in HS.

I think the two best lifters in modern times probably would be Nick Romeo and maybe Lou Gachelin.

Agree. Two monsters. No surprise they went on to great careers at SU.

Bryon might be close. He might have gotten a 905 squat. I Hope a few of the other big guys in the incoming class are close as well.

Not sure if the OL we are bringing in will be our best incoming class ever but they are definitely the biggest. Can’t want to see what they do during their time on the hill.

Wasn't that Wil Froumy's thing?
He was up there. Looks like he benched 375 in HS. Could not find any squat info for him.

For comparison purposes, Macky had the biggest squat on the team at 615 when he was a junior in 2012.

One more data point: Romeo won the state weight lifting championship as a senior in HS and set a state record in the bench press with 445. He was also a center and a four year starter here. One of our best ever.

But even he redshirted his true frosh year at Syracuse.

I personally think it will be the best OL talent in our school's history varied, large, mobile, strong. We have 7 or 8 players where we can get 5-6 top level ACC talent.

I can see him on the two deep but he isnt going to start

Yeah starting is a lot to ask of a true freshman, especially one who won’t arrive until late spring/early summer. Monster though he is.

I get everyone's points. Again this discussion started with the comment "True freshman starting on the oline at any P4 school would be a complete shock". I disagree with that comment. I subsequently shared from a Google search that freshman started on the oline at numerous colleges in 24 and referenced some of them. I understand the challenges associated to start for Stewart. I am just stating both #1 and #2 centers are gone. Our 3rd string center who I don't believe saw any game action (Hornsby) and Stewart are basically our current centers on the team. Stewart played center in high school in PA andis in the state's all star game so clearly he can ball. He is physically capable to start at a P4. He would need to learn scheme and calls. Is he going into the summer as our #1? No probably not. Could he move to #1 by end of camp. Absolutely and based on the above it's not uncommon nor a stretch, especially given our numbers at that position. Simply freshman start on the oline in all the leagues and likely every year. Given circumstances at Syracuse and what Stewart brings I can absolutely see him earn starting snaps.

I think that he will earn snaps. He might start by mid-season. I don't see him starting against Tennessee.
