INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis (Ind.) Bishop Chatard has recently produced a few of the Midwest’s top offensive linemen and they have two juniors that appear to be headed down the same road.
Matt McCann has an offer from Iowa with interest coming from the likes of Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue.
Leading the three-time defending state champions in the trenches this fall are class-of-2015 offensive tackles in
Matt McCann, who already holds an offer from Iowa, and
Adam Solomon.
McCann and Solomon are playing in the same jersey worn by current Notre Dame offensive linemen
Zack Martin and Nick Martin, and Sid Anvoots, who signed with Louisville in 2012.
Head coach Vince Lorenzano has coached them all and joked about the lineman tradition the Trojans program is putting together.
“It’s mostly the water we drink here,” Lorenzano said before getting serious.
“It’s really more or less the families. We have great families. The families generate everything. Everything that we do is not related to the staff in my personal opinion. Although the staff works hard the families are attune to football, they know football, they prepare their kids early and they’re ready to go when they come to us.”
The 6-foot-6, 290-pound McCann was ready last fall when he helped Bishop Chatard bring home another ring. Besides Iowa, he’s hearing from the likes of Cincinnati, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue. Lorenzano feels it won’t be long before there’s many more.
“By the time the spring hits he’ll have 15-20 offers more than likely,” Lorenzano said. “He’s a big kid that can move, 3.8 GPA and comes from a great family. Got a lot of upside there and he can move people. He’s a good get your hands on the guy and move people out.”
The 6-foot-6, 290-pound Solomon is coming into his own this fall. Cincinnati, Illinois and Indiana are a few of the schools that have him on the radar.
Solomon has emerged as a prospect to watch this fall. Illinois, Indiana and Purdue have noticed.
“It’s his size and his ability to move,” Lorenzano said. “He looks good. He’s still learning the game. Moves well but still has to learn the physicality of the game and learn the technique pieces that will make him better. Good student, 3.4 GPA, comes from a real solid family.”
McCann earned his scholarship from Iowa at camp during the summer and he’s trying to return for a game before the end of the fall.
“Coach Lorenzano said they were close on me, they just wanted to see me in action,” McCann recapped. “I went and I guess I performed to my potential.”
McCann sees a potential opportunity with the Hawkeyes program.
“I really like their o-line coach, Coach (Brian) Ferentz,” he said. “He’s not only the head coach’s son, but he’s a good guy, he’s young, he played at Iowa so if I did go to Iowa he’d know the roots of the offensive line.
“The facilities, they’re getting new ones, there is a lot of money going into that. Football is a top priority there.”
Both McCann and Solomon made it down to Indiana for the Navy game.
“I’m getting lot of letters and things from them,” Solomon said. “I love the facilities. Great atmosphere as well. A lot of camaraderie with the team. I love the coaches. I’ve been staying in contact with the coaches.”
“I like the place,” McCann added. “It’s really close. It’s close to home. I really like (offensive line) Coach (Greg) Frey.”
Both McCann and Solomon also attended the Notre Dame-Purdue game in West Lafayette.
“Purdue, I enjoyed it there,” Solomon said. “They have great facilities, a great team, great atmosphere.”
McCann is one of the in-state prospects Notre Dame is giving a strong early look. He attended the Oklahoma game in South Bend.
“Notre Dame was a really cool experience,” McCann said. “I’ve never seen a game go like that before. Just amazing.”
Before the end of the fall, McCann and Solomon would also like to get down to Cincinnati for a game.
