Old SU football highlights to get you fired up for the season

The end of the game was all SU after Graves started a brawl that resulted in two critical WVU players being ejected. A series of Graves to Gedney passes won the game. A miraculous win on the road.

I contend Graves didn't start the brawl. He may have thrown the ball at a player, but the cheap shot late hit is what led to it.

College football was so much better in the '80's and '90's. There was so much more parity. There's an FSU at the peak of it's power being upset by NC State. Northwestern beat Oklahoma. Aside from FSU, you didn't have the same teams in the top 10 every year.

I can't find good video of the '92 Marvin Graves miracle in Morgantown, but this clip of Nehlen's displeasure is wonderful. I was at the opposite end of the stadium from Graves' winning TD pass to Gedney, but the anger felt by WV fans at anything in orange remains one of the most potent drugs of my life. LGO!!

Nebraska was the other one
I forgot about them. The variance of styles in that era was fun too. I doubt we'll ever again see two teams play for the NC with styles as different as Nebraska and Florida in 1996. And how about a team in the NC game scoring 62 pts while throwing 15 passes and completing only 6 and having a rushing difference of 524 to -28.

It was a perfect combination of events. WVU had just scored to take the lead and their defense was stiff, intending to accentuate a WVU win by brutalizing Graves a twitch. He threw the football at the transgressor and the outcome was the ejection of two of WVU'S better defensive players, among others. Every play, starting with the brawl, raised the tension in the crowd.

When WVU took the lead, the crowd around me was boisterously trash talking, happy that the Mountaineers were going to win. Then the brawl, the ejections, a questionable pass interference penalty, and several completed passes to Gedney including the game winner. With every play, the crowd that had been happily anticipating a win became more and more angry.

Many an innocent couch met their demise that day. I was with one of my employees, a diehard WVU fan, and he helped to usher me through the angry crowd. I was wearing my favorite SU sweatshirt and got shoved around some as we left. We listened to a litany of post-game furor on the radio until we were about an hour away. All because Graves tossed the ball at a WVU player who thought he'd put a licking on him while he could. I savor every win over WVU, but that day was superb.

Threads like this remind us of why we're SU fans and the moments that set the hook and motivated us to internalize the passion we have for sports. For me that game was the win over #1 Nebraska. My first games were at Archbold and my physics lab was under the stands. I moved to Ithaca in 1978 and didn't get back until the 80's.

In 1984, my brother was working for Remington Arms and involved in the Remington employees club. They had season tickets and he was able to get tickets to the Nebraska game. I shifted from a casual fan to a dedicated one during that game. We were among those on the field after the game, and helped stop traffic in the street. We were better in later years, but that game was magic. I've been fortunate to be at some memorable games, but none that affected me more than Nebraska.

1993 at East Carolina. Have I mentioned how much I love these uniforms?

Why did we play them on the road back to back in 92-93? I also remember their coach being a punk.

Nebraska had an insanely great run. 3 titles, missed 45 yd FG from winning 4, and a 4th down stop away against Texas from playing for 5 in 5 years.

That was a Thursday night ESPN game. First time I remember hearing the name Marvin Harrison.

Also I remember espn sharing some stat where SU was undefeated scoring at least 30 pts or something like that. Streak ended a few weeks later against BC.

That was the first W that I saw in person as a Frosh in SUMB.

The first 2 games were away games we didn't travel to.
Then we had Rutty at home, and it was a total derp-fest 0-19 L.
(at least the SUNJ MB was fun to party with afterwards)

Then it was the Nebraska game.

The same Nebraska that totally boatraced us the prior season.

It was just an amazing experience to be there for that game.
Such an unexpected W - which, frankly - should have been by even more.
Fantastic job of coaching, playcalling, and execution.

It was actually three years in a row, 92-94.

No doubt. The 1991 loss prevented us from going 11-1 and a potential Top 5 finish and the 1995 loss (where we had a 21-0 lead) probably prevented a 10-2 Top 10 finish.

Jeff Blake happened in 91.

How cool...

I’ll bet there’s been no one born in WV named “Marvin” in 30 years.

Those losses in 91 and 95 were brutal
Both at home - oof! …and both really took the wind out of the sails. Could’ve been 11-1 and 10-2 those years.

Mcnabb was up 21-0 in 95. Smh
