Oline

Not sure who you mean. We have had 4 transfers starting - Bleich, Reed, Bradford, Petry, and Wohlabaugh Jr. was a starter until injured. More might work in. So, that would be 6 roster spots. The true frosh seem to have size and potential. Possibly we need to land better quality when we hit the portal?

Could say that for most of our units, except LB.
Need better guys. This was meant to being able to increase the ability to play with the top tier teams. As currently constructed it’s good enough to compete at least evenly with all but Clemson and FSU.

A top tier line for SU would be one that had Bergeron and Pugh level starters with kids like Reed, Bleich, and Wohlabaugh to finish the line, with the rest of the unit in development and stepping in as RS Sophs and Jrs.

Losing Wohlabaugh was such a big blow. I'm not suggesting that he is on par with the likes of Bergeron / Pugh / Hickey [yet, he's only a RS soph], but he was an SEC caliber recruit with good ability.

Would he have been better suited to counter that Clemson pass rush? Obviously, we won't find out until he's back on the field.

But having a guy like that would probably bolster the entire unit's ability to contend with the likes of more elite teams, like you list.

Then, a guy like Petry -- who has proven to be serviceable -- would just be spelling him to give DW a quick rest for a handful of snaps, instead of having to step into the starting role against a group of 5-star DEs. And we'd be talking about how splendid it is to have decent depth.

I wasn’t sure why they took out Bradford either. I have to go back and watch. I thought he was doing OK. Petry on the other hand got abused early and that was a freshman defensive end. I thought Ellis really struggled. Other people said they thought he played well, I must’ve been watching a different game.

Ellis actually went in early in the 2nd quarter, I believe the series after Bradford got bull rushed and gave up a sack. Ellis played well in the 1st half.

While the line has had to juggle and didn't perform as we hoped Saturday, I will say that I feel waaaaaaaay better about next season's group than I thought I would have at this point in the season.

Between Cruz, Ellis, Reed, Bradford and a healthy Wohlabaugh, with Petry and Ilaoa as backups, that's a lot of returning guys with meaningful snaps under their belt.

Need to go fishing in those SEC waters again. Or get a Juco or G5 All American with the right measurables.

And go get some more Canadians.

honestly we should be actively monitoring SEC depth charts and rosters to see who's been leapfrogged and not playing. I would hire staff just to monitor the SEC charts and playing time. The SEC portal boards.

Ingraham was a great find though coming off injury. He's one of the first Syracuse DT's I haven't seen Clemson be able to manhandle.

I’ve been looking forward to Ingraham playing more.

Jobity hung in pretty well I thought as well. Made a beautiful tackle for a loss.

After a rewatch yeah, Cruz struggles with his feet/quickness against the elite athletes both against edge rushers, and even to get into the second level to get the linebackers, their freshman future AA DL made our guys look like freshman including Bleich. Ellis was just completely and utterly overmatched against that type team/athlete. Bradfords better.

So in general they’ll do ok/be competitive against lesser foes as per usual up here, but we’ll need a superhuman qb performance to ever beat the elite.

Upgrades are always welcome and we should always take opportunities to boost the talent, it just seems that next year we project to return as complete a potential line as we've seen in a long time.

I share the exact same thoughts with everything you said. Against Purdue it seemed they were helping Petry more by hanging Mang or a TE chip block the DE. I didn't see that Saturday?

Lol. Those were my words. Grading in the 30’s is considered very poor and he was below that. So I said below very poor. He’s been pretty decent this year but Saturday he was totally outmatched. Maybe he had a 5 star future pro across from him? I don’t know. But Ellis coming in for him I think was to get Bleich at RG and taking on whomever was abusing Bradford. Bleich has been our best OL this year, both pass and run blocking.

Lot of procedure calls on him, though.

Yes, it seems like line up every 3 or 4 years that we get a good group of guys back with 10-20 starts each.

And I mean spending money and roster spots. And out playing kids that aren’t going to cut it, help them find a landing spot.
I totally agree. Spend what nil money we can on the big guys. A couple stud transfers and a few freshmen to grow and learn. On defensive side, Clemson couldn’t block 4 or 52. We need both side of big guys. That’s how Duke turned around so fast.

Unfortunately, Dungey ain’t walking through the door anytime soon
